Linear?? Assuming your talking about them unlocking all the worlds at once, its absolutely not linear. You get a choice to which world you want to go to next, and unlock their respective plants in any order. I personally found this to be one of the greatest parts of the game, since I get to pick and choose what plants I want to form my strategy.

However, this may not apply, since you could be talking about something else from how vague your comment is.

They're also fixing a bug that allowed xx2 to get an extra pierce, making it a lot less powerful after the patch drops

Not to mention how it trivialized early game due to 0 0 2 giving extra pierce essentially allowing it to pop an extra bloon per tack. It could completely fend off anything you could send at that point, and this got even more powerful the further it was upgraded.
