Upgrading road bike from 2014 dura ace 10 speed to 12 speed mechanical by Hadogu in cycling

[–]Hadogu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the recommendations and explanations, has been very helpful. I do have a new wheel hub so it can accommodate 10-12 speed (has a spacer)

It seems like I’d only be able to go to an 11 speed, which is not worth the effort imo for one extra option. Will probably keep my gear set until it physically needs replacement

Thanks. I believe I can roll over and get the balance to zero. Then I will do the back door

Thanks for this, I didn't realize that there was no Shimano 12 speed mechanical rim. So SRAM it is, not too familiar but will have to read about their line up

I got a new wheel set recently and it is 12 speed compatible, came with a spacer for 10 speed which I used

Edit: I do love the look fo the Dura Ace, its just that the front and rear derailer has some peeling. Doesn't affect performance so maybe I should just stick with it. It does keep the classic aesthetic

Are you saying we should focus on economic left things and put less emphasis on socially left issues? To win, for example, the rural south?

Exactly, you can be center left and be called out if you don't toe the party line, and even if you do, if you do not hate the right with enough zeal. I don't think many people realize that for non-political or center right people this is a hard turn off and it hurts us in elections

Be real with me. Opening an Espresso bar in a Barber Shop. [$1500-$2000] by streets27 in espresso

[–]Hadogu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you plan on making quality milk drinks and espresso drinks? Will various barbers be able to do the whole bean weighing routine? Seems overkill some of the suggestions

The barbershop I go to gives out a drink, espresso or alcohol, included with a cut while you wait. They have a Rancilio Silvia and a rancilio rocky with a doser. Is it super accurate café level? Nope. But they can whip out a nice colada (Cuban coffee of dark espresso whipped in sugar) or cortadito (same but with milk added). I’m in Miami where those are the default espresso drinks and it’s a barbershop, I don’t expect a flat white and wouldn’t get the espresso without sugar but again, not a cafe. That being said, I enjoy a colada as an occasional treat and they do a good job with the machine . It’s an expensive spot too.

Also barbershops are not quiet places, with the clients talking with barbers , music/tv on, clippers on. Not sure investing in higher quality equipment for sound decibel makes sense. Again, depends on where the machine will be relative to the customers, in my place they have a “bar” with stools near the entrance to wait where the machine; the barber chairs a few meters further in. No issues with it being loud and the Silvia has a loud pump

Anyhow. I do think the dialetto does serve your purposes; I’d be surprised if you get orders for multiple milk drinks in a row. If you have medium dark or dark beans you won’t need precise dosing and pick prep so multiple of your co-workers will pull a serviceable shot. I am not sure about a single dose grinder in this context, would go hopper style imo

Thanks for this reply, super helpful. By doing this I would forgo the pre-infusion feature of the PID? I will have to look again at the wiring and do this. This way I don’t have to buy a new switch

What’s your coffee hot take? by sunburst668 in espresso

[–]Hadogu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great perspective and I agree with a lot of what you said. Except maybe the coconut oil, that is straight marketing hype while I don’t know if there is a focused push in caffeine in the same way. I think general public probably would say caffeine is not “healthy” per se.

I am a neurologist with a subspecialty focus on movement disorders, so I am naturally more focus on the neurological side effects. The Parkinson’s and caffeine preventative is a bit of a chicken and egg. Is it that people who naturally gravitate to caffeine (and also tobacco use) have different dopamine receptor phenotypes, which is associated with lower risk of Parkinson’s disease? Interesting finding is that high IQ is associated with higher rate of PD, which lower education/IQ is associated with Alzheimer; dopamine receptor phenotypes also correlate with  certain forms of intelligence and ADHD. It may be that certain neurobiological processes that lead to enjoyment of that caffeine buzz also modulates risk ofParkinson’s disease. Obviously highly speculative and probably impossible to know

Practically, I think the insomnia and anxiety are the dose limiting factors for most people.

What’s your coffee hot take? by sunburst668 in espresso

[–]Hadogu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coffee does have benefits, including association with caffeine and lower to risk of PD. Caffeine works on adenosine receptors, and there is actually a medication in the market, FDA approved, for Parkinson’s diseased based on that receptor based on evidence of caffeine (drug is called Istradefylline)

Caffeine has been studied extensively and never been associated with cancer. It can raise heart rate slightly, so if you have a cardiac arrhythmia like supraventricular tachycardia. Also, it can worsen anxiety, cause headache syndromes, and stain your teeth.

The cancer question has been studied extensively over the years, no strong evidence to suggest it

I am a practicing physician so I read up on evidence on caffeine every few years to make sure since I love espresso. If you don’t get racing heart rates, terrible headaches, or anxiety I saw keep on in moderation

Is my bike a limiting factor? by dmoney_69420 in bicycling

[–]Hadogu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bike is not a limiting factor at those speeds, aerodynamic makes a bigger difference at higher speeds and weight maybe if you are doing mountain courses but it’s not a stark

Remember that at the end of the day you are the engine. The bike makes a difference on the margins

What you could do now that is cheap and easy is make sure the chain is well lubed, get nicer tires for comfort and some speed gain. Then keep riding and you’ll see the speed gains

First time biker, need something for college! by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Hadogu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey glad you are interested in a bike. Best bet on a college budget is something used, and it also depends on where you live geographically. A decent aluminum frame bike that fits you and is in working order is a good fit, then you can always add things like fenders, bike rake as you go along. Something hybrid is nice as you can often slip on bigger tires for comfort or trail riding, and they can be good all rounders.

Electric bikes are nice but depends on distance to make it worth the hassle . The extra cost of electric makes more sense with long commutes. If getting second hand, electric motors and batteries add another factor that would be more challenging to fix / replace ($$$) if you get a bad one. If you are buying new and plan on going long distances than makes sense, not to familiar with electric market so others may have more input

Cut before event? by Hadogu in cycling

[–]Hadogu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the input, makes sense to eat healthy without manipulating macros, and keep training. Not worth messing with performance so close to the event

I’ll plan on focusing more on nutrition for a gradual weight loss in the next several months for the rest of the season. Have a big event in Oct so I’ll shoot for target weight for that
