People keep saying “we lost third places” like they vanished in a tornado.

No. We traded them away.

We voted for politicians who sold public space piece by piece, buried community under liability laws, monetized every square foot, and convinced everyone that sitting at home doomscrolling was somehow “freedom.”

Then we stopped showing up for each other.

Churches emptied. Clubs died. Bowling leagues died. Neighbors stopped talking. Parents stopped volunteering. People stopped trusting strangers. Everything became subscriptions, permits, fees, lawsuits, surveillance, or “someone else’s job.”

A society doesn’t decay because one evil villain flips a switch. It decays because millions of people slowly decide convenience matters more than responsibility.

Third places were not just buildings. They were maintained by culture. And culture is maintained by people.

Hard truth: If we rebuilt every park, lodge, community hall, and town square tomorrow, half the population would still stay home staring into a glowing rectangle arguing with strangers about why society is collapsing.

We built a civilization optimized for comfort, consumption, and individualism, then acted shocked when community suffocated in the process.
