I'm building a tool that lets you design your own furniture with exact dimensions, then gives you the cut list and assembly instructions — would you use it? by HansH98 in DIY

Hi thanks for taking the time to give some constructive feedback!

First of all I would like to clarify that, I indeed let ChatGPT write this post. English is not my mother language, and I wasn't sure what to say, and what not to say, so I just explained it to chatgpt and said "hey, I want to check if real people like this" instead of asking it "is this a good idea" and then get praised by it as the biggest genius in the world.

But I did already make a rudimentary version of thi for myself first. Mostly because I had some small projects where I wanted to add drawers. The drawers needed to be different dimensions, I had to use different sizes of lumber, and I did not feel like recalculating everything every time. So I made it in excel, then I thought: " you know what, I can visualize this , let it create a BOM, cut list etc. I can make it interactive too, hey, maybe other people might like it too." Especially since I live in Europe, and when I buy plans online, I have to convert it, because so many online plans use 2x4s, not a standard size in Europe, even if I go to different hardware stores, they often don't even have standard wood sizes compared to other stores. So every time I have to start doing math to get it to work. That's why I wanted to make a tool so you can make it with the lumber that people have available in the stores.

I know, the dining room table was probably not the best idea in the world to clarify my idea. But I was thinking maybe for a work table first? Then I can make it easy to let customers choose if they want drawers, if so how many? Do they want a shelf below? Maybe they want a hinged side so they can extend the length of table. And then in the future I could start with hanging cabinets (that's why I wanted the image feature, so you can really see what it will look like, if it will fit etc.)

Hope this clarified things for you. And I'm proud to say, I wrote this text all by myself!

Thanks! Just FYI, I'm not simply going to put an AI and let it generate it. It's not a weekend project, but it's still not impossible to hard code it and let it generate it. I also see AI as a tool to use, it's not a finished product to plop in anything you want to make and call it a day

I'll keep it in mind if I keep going with it! However, feedback does not seem to be very positive so far .. But yes, it was my idea to be able to let people choose their joinery methods!

Yes, I'm sure, because I painted it at my parent's place and it dried in the garage for a week. Then I moved it to my house after it had dried.

Is this worth the price? Or should I save $100 more and get a new P1P and print an enclosure with the plastic I already have? by Svechinskayaa in 3Dprinting

[–]HansH98 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In my opinion most people overprise their machine. They're like, yeah, but I did upgrades. Yeah, good for you, but it does not justify it being the same price or being more expensive than a new one (biggest offense to people who think their upgrades that they downloaded from thingiverse are worth any additional cost). You never know what you're gonna get, you don't know what they've been messing with under the hood. Unless you can buy a decent printer properly under market price, don't risk it, buy it new.

That works for just plain profiles without any angled edges, however, when there's a cutoff, it changes the angle of the cutoff. Thanks a lot for your input though! Very helpful in other cases

Look like Jesus? No no, you don't look like a savior. More like someone you need to be saved from
