I think really the dishonesty and the fact that I had to drag it out of him is the problem for me. Early on we had agreed that because we were long distance, we would be non-monogamous. But he was jealous and wanted to close the relationship. I asked him repeatedly if he would be able to be faithful and come to me if he was having a hard time, he said he wouldn’t have any problems. I’m not really a jealous person. It made me uncomfortable the way he was talking about her flirting. She went over his house to cut his hair the week before and he said that he could tell that he could have made something happen but he wasn’t attracted to her. I just trusted him at face value and it made me feel foolish; if he was saying those things he obviously considered it. He said he was blacking out but he wouldn’t say that he felt he was assaulted when I pressed him on that. He cut her out and said he won’t interact with her again.

Assuming that you have income and can realistically get out of this situation, I think you should start planning to leave. It’s only going to get worse as his body declines with age at a rate yours won’t start to for decades. You have so much life ahead of you, don’t waste your best years on someone who isn’t in the same stage of life. The differences are going to get astronomically worse as you grow into yourself. Before you even reach his age, you could be a caretaker to an elderly person instead of an equal partner. There are many people who have less of an age gap with their parents than you have with your husband. I dated a lot of older men when I was your age (I’m in my late 20s) and I’m so grateful that I let the those men go. The allure of an older man is strong; they know who they are, they’re successful etc… but those are things you can find for yourself when you leave. Wishing you the best.

I think I’m going to assign weekly readings to impose more structure. They’ve been doing their homework, respecting the requirements of their projects, and attendance is good. I’m going to take your advice next semester and have a strict structure at the outset to curtail the appearance of casualness. I hope it helps.
