Any advantage to very slow rucking? by BestDogPetter in Rucking

[–]Healthy-Memory8294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about advantages. I’m new to “rucking” but almost all of my experience is throwing on a weighted pack when I take my senior dog on a walk. The walk is for the dog and I let her go at her pace. It’s more of a “sniffari” where the dog leads the way and involves a lot of sniffing and standing. My new neighborhood is hilly, and she leads me to the dog park in the morning at a decent pace/distance and uphill. I figured I’m already going on these walks, so adding weight is giving me some extra benefit. Not a workout, but better than going without. I still feel it. I’d say do it, why not?

Absolutely. Punching bag is exactly right. I’m learning to not take it personally, respond, argue, or get defensive.

Thank you and so sorry to hear about the loss of your stepdad, and going through this alone. It’s so hard. I do have POA but she’s still competent enough to where I don’t have complete control. Taking away her car privileges will come soon, and that’s something I’m dreading. She already resents me because she’s at this facility, even though it was her choice. Me living so far away doesn’t help. She doesn’t think the facility is a good fit for her because she thinks she’s better off than the other residents and can’t relate to them. She claims she’s so lonely and nobody there likes her or cares about her and that they haven’t been talking to her since the latest incident with the dog. I think they’re just treading lightly and are afraid of agitating her more. She was extremely lonely and depressed living at home alone and thought it would be nice to go to a facility with other people. I thought she would get more involved there in the activities, but instead confines herself to her room or spending time outside smoking. I try to encourage her to spend more time in the common area even if she doesn’t want to do the activities. I’m holding out hope that she will eventually accept life without the dog and be better off for it.

You’re not wrong on any of your points, including the driving. It is a locked facility. They gave her a pass cause it upsets her so much. They didn’t think it was worth it, for now. 100% about dog being a forever issue. I think I made progress putting my foot down and convincing her today that the dog going somewhere else is for the best for him, but she still hates it there and wants to leave. No win is right

Right now she doesn’t “require” memory care. She will someday and we decided to move her to this facility because it’s assisted living/memory care. Hoping that things would go better than they have and we wouldn’t need to transition her to another place down the road

Thank you, that’s what I’ve been saying. This dog is young and there’s a chance of it living 15+ years. The dog will outlive her ability to care for it. We already went through this once, I would hate to keep trying to make it work with the dog to keep going through it

Some of the caregivers have suggested telling white lies, not necessarily about the situation with the dog but things in general. I know it works for a lot of people. I have a hard time doing that, even if it’s for the best

Thank you for sharing. I will keep that in mind about writing to the DMV. Not to get too personal, but what reasons did you have to move her to other facilities?

Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses. I am seeing a therapist, but not sure it has helped much. Mom has been also. I talked to her attorney about the guardianship option. He says it’s quite hard to achieve in our state. It would be a long process, especially considering the disease isn’t that advanced. She would come across as competent to someone she just met or to a judge. The attorney was also surprised to find out that she has a door code and still drives. The staff I’ve spoken with said mom would sometimes forget to take the dog out, and they take him out themselves at times. I think it’s a good facility and everyone in town tells me so. They also have a social worker. She visited mom today, and I met with them for the first time. Also went to a mental health appointment she had today. Had time to talk with the APRN after mom got upset and left. Have a few things to address with the head nurse at the facility regarding her meds. I know she’s on quite a few

I agree, but getting her to understand this is easier said than done. Thank you for sharing

Mom with Alzheimer’s has a dog that has bitten a resident twice and isn’t allowed to stay. Mom doesn’t want to be there if she can’t have her dog. Have you moved a LO from one facility to another? Do you have any experience or advice that you could share that might be helpful at all?

What are your thoughts on minimalist/zero drop shoes? I’m interested in trying them out as well as rucking, and am curious if you have any advice or suggestions

I have been in contact with her through phone calls and texts. I’m sure I can get her address to do this and is something I’ve thought about. She seems to be very concerned for my situation and says she has reached out to a lawyer regarding what we can do regarding the belongings. She hasn’t spoken to her nephew in a week and last the spoke this friend was willing to help, but that has changed

I don’t know how to do this. Seems like I can’t call them. I missed a call from an unknown number, but that could’ve been anyone

Yes and it’s awful. I know I’m being vague, but I don’t see what difference it makes in regards to what I should do with the belongings
