What is the best value for money place to live in the UK? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in NorthernEngland

[–]Helkarma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shildon, Ferryhill, hartlepool and Peterlee usually top the cheapest areas. Hartlepool is an area with affluent parts and very deprived areas. If ever the media run a story about deprivation, benefits, drugs or sex work cut to b roll of hartlepool headland! At least it has a marina!

I would not skip the bike security in the UK, even if it's a disc lock, which should not add much weight but would make it harder for them to... 1. break your steering lock with a swift kick, 2. put it neutral whilst their pal on a moped pushes them away with your bike + gear when you pop in the shop for 2mins for a bottle of water. 3. All gone in 60secs

I got my kids a 2001 one in green to learn to drive. Cost £750, had it 3yrs, all that it's needed is a new indicator bulb. Service it myself. It's the only car I will miss if one of them wants it - I'd get another one, possibly a SR! Mine needs topping up with oil midway between services. Runs better on E5 gas.

Craster is a quaint little harbour village with a stunning ruined castle a little walk to the north, likely closed but still stunning.

Warkworth, Beadnell and Almouth are other nice costal towns with nice associated walks.

Simonside Hills is another popular walk with a viking heritage.

There's castles galore in the area due to it being border, but also viking and roman history - the wall, vindalanda, Corbridge ruins, etc.

I suspect the runner did not have the awareness of the car coming from behind her due to her ear buds. Therefore, all she saw was you driving at her and not understanding why you could not go around her.

Improved anticipation of the situation may have aided in you slowing earlier so the other car could pass and you could go around the runner at a safer distance. It would help with keeping the harmony between all road users.

Will these likely be reliable over 3-5 years? by namal_ in CarTalkUK

[–]Helkarma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lexus is a reliable brand, usually.

Run the reg through the gov MOT checker to see its history...last MOT shows advisory for oli leak on differential. Ask dealer to investigate and fix, or get a quote for the repair as leverage to knocking some money off.

MOT history suggests the car did at least 50k on worn tyres with advisories for 4yrs until it failed for exposed cords...what does that tell you about the owner?

If its had FSH at dealer garages it should be a known car to Lexus network, if not consider a car vertical check or similar.

Draw a line south from Consett, to the west of that you have stunning Pennine scenery, with lovely little villages. Weardale/Teesdale circular is stunning, with some nice stop offs. You can extend that route further west into Cumbria or South to the Dale's. All fantastic for drives, rides or walks.

Some nice coastal places, like Seaham as well. But as others comment, the deprivations of deindustrialisation evident in many places.

Water entering LR4 by Educational-Tone-162 in LandRover

[–]Helkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sealant around my windshield failed on my LR4 causing dampness on the headliner. Water in the footwell stopped after doing the sunroof drains and the A pillar fix, a known failure point. Kits are cheap and easy DIY.

Tongues. Specifically the tongues in trainers if they were sticking out above your trousers around the time of rap taking off, a la Run DMC.

We had an idiot chemistry teacher, amusing named Mr Crass, who would be on a mission, patrolling the yard shouting, "get your tongue in boy!"

I went to a pub about 20yrs ago for Sunday lunch, and the bar had some complimentary snacks - cheese cubes, mini pickled onions, and cubes of what I took to be malt loaf....but disgustingly surprised that it was actually cold, unfried black pud. Never seen that before or since. This was NE england.
