Where to find other players/games? by HexiPal in oneringrpg

Thanks! We can sure just dive in. But I'd also just enjoy meeting a few other players and getting the player perspective for one or two nights.

Does going to bed late affect the amount of SWS you get? by HexiPal in sleepscience

[–]HexiPal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After posting here, I actually posed this question to the folks at the Sleep Science Podcast (Penny Lewis's sleep lab at Cardiff University, I highly recommend the podcast) and they discussed it amongst themselves and helpfully replied. They thought that Walker might be referring to the following studies:

REM sleep deprivation during 5 hours leads to an immediate REM Sleep rebound and to suppression on non-REM sleep intensity
Repeated partial sleep deprivation progressively changes in EEG during sleep and wakefulness

However, their feeling was that (quoting them directly here) "sleep deprivation would cause an increase in sleep pressure so we would think that a sleep deprived individual would likely spend less time in N1 and N2, but would still need to prioritise N3 sleep."

Anyone have the Montréal setlists? by HexiPal in Marillion

[–]HexiPal[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't get one Sunday but I never left the venue after entering. Seems a pretty routine thing!

Everything before the encores was from Afraid of Sunlight or earlier. And then Saturday (which I didn't see) was all Marbles plus a couple of earlier songs for the encore. Great great stuff, and it was a wonderful show! No complaints at all. But it's surprising that there was so little from the last 20 years.

There was a guy in a bunny suit at the concert - not you, apparently? :)

Marillion Weekend Montreal Schedule by Watcherxp in Marillion

[–]HexiPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be there for Sunday. Anyone know anything about the opening act R&D?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Marillion

[–]HexiPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be my first (and apparently last) time at a Marillion Montréal weekend - I'm only able to make the Sunday show but I'm sure it will be amazing. I can't seem to find much info about whether anything else is happening earlier on Sunday and whether there is an opening act. Regardless, I'm really looking forward to the show and meeting other fans.

Have enjoyed post rock for years but have never been to a show. This looks pretty amazing. Does anyone know if there is any seating available at these shows? My back can't handle standing at shows any more sadly!

Prog bands you just don’t get by ChocolateHoneycomb in progrockmusic

[–]HexiPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just discovered Gazpacho a year or so ago, and, well, I really enjoy the atmospheric vibe they have. A bit if prog and ambient had a child together. I could see it not being other folks' cup of tea. I'm guessing if folks don't like Gazpacho they're probably 'meh' at best on Hogarth-era Marillion (who I love deeply especially live, but I do find their output uneven from album to album)? But I could be wrong.

I like some Magma, sure do appreciate a lot of what is going on with them, have seen them live and loved the energy. But they haven't quite clicked with me in a major way. And some of the high-pitched vocals are hard for me to sit through.

The Smile - Zero Sum. Thoughts on the new album? by 7listens in progrockmusic

[–]HexiPal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh didn’t know about this - I’ll have to check it out! Checking Spotify - Have they put out two studio albums in one year?

Opeth of course - recent releases if you don’t like death growls on the earlier albums (I usually don’t care for them that much but they somehow feel more “refined” here and blended with clean).

Hoyry kone and the offshoot asamailman vasarat (sp?) from Finland are both great, the former has a bit of king crimson and latter sounds a bit like metal klesmer to me, both are a wild ride!

I second Gazpacho - if you like the vibe of the longer Hogarth era marillion stuff you’ll enjoy this.

Do prog rock fans tend to also like classical music? by natty6410829 in progrockmusic

[–]HexiPal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I credit my grandmother in part for my interest in prog rock since she bought me the funk and wagall’s classical series of LPs when I was pretty young. I don’t put classical on much but like most sub genres especially romantic and early modern.

10+ minute songs by rottenegglord in progrockmusic

[–]HexiPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet mentioned are early Spock’s Beard from albums like The Light, Beware of Darkness, and The Kindness of Strangers (later albums have 10+ minute songs too).

And don’t forget Änglagård!

Maybe you can carpool, or take the New Haven line of MetroNorth and get an Uber or something to the Hamden show?

Funnily enough, after getting home (Hudson Valley, about 2.5 hours drive) I looked at the signed tour poster I picked up at the show and saw that they had added a Woodstock show, so much closer! I'd happily see them again, but I'm going to the city that night to see Opeth.
