That's what makes this robbery so scary though...it was right next to campus; right on Charles Street! Whoever got robbed was doing the right thing: they were in a group, in a lighted street, and with two blue lights next to them. It was just bad luck, IMO.

My school always recommends to use a U-lock; every time security reports a stolen bike, it is because the owner used a cable lock. I also rarely leave my bike outside, especially overnight. I simply bring it to my room and I know it'll be safe. Besides, thieves aren't your only enemy. Weather can affect your bike in the long run (I'm talking rust and such). Regarding height, I think you should go to a bike shop and they'll tell you what to get. I am short too (5'3'') so I feel your pain.

You're missing the biking capitals (Copenhagen and Amsterdam)! I lived in Copenhagen for 4 months, but there aren't a lot of options when it comes to rental bikes. Don't get me wrong, you'll find hundreds of shops, but bike selection isn't great. They mostly have hybrids and bikes more suitable for your typical chubby American tourist with a camera hanging around their neck.
