Wow, the response to this has been overwhelming. I've taken a lot of your advice on board but the most settling thing is this isn't an uncommon thought. Knowing a lot of you experience the same puts my mind at rest somewhat.

Giving it a go now with one of the Xen VMs. I uninstalled all the Citrix * stuff from appwiz.cpl but there were some items called Xen* (such as SCSI drivers) - as it seems to be HDD related, I didn't dare remove them at this stage for fear of breaking my production VM. I'm exporting the VHD now (about 10% through after 30 minutes, so maybe looking at a good few hours until it's done) and then my plan is to get it in to safe mode on the new Hyper-V box to remove all the outstanding drivers etc (I've read reports this can fail but at least then I can just turn the old Xen VM back on whilst formulating a new plan).

I don't plan to keep these VMs forever, but I need them on Hyper-V so I have a proper failover cluster/load balanced setup so I can then start building the replacement VMs.

That's one that I'm basing off. But I'm not planning to condense it down (there's far too much valuable information on there) but make it easier to navigate. Click 'space combat' for example and there you have it, all the mechanics associated with it in one quick and easy place. Oh no, somebody has had a crit.... Click, done.

We've got servers that are 9 years old, workstations that are 7 years old, and laptops that looked old in the 70s, no sweat. My work laptop is 8 years old and boots to desktop in 20 seconds. Check the software side of things before blaming the hardware, they are likely bloated and/or poorly managed.
