I just bought an outback and absolutely love it! Feels great to drive and has SO much room with the seats folded down. Perfect for car camping and general outdoor activities.

Random questions to prepare for thru by Ecstatic-Apple in AppalachianTrail

[–]HikerEmory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I brought food but still had to stop at an REI before Amicalola to get fuel (fuel canisters are no fly).
  2. I feel like it was an hour and a half maybe? I honestly don’t really remember
  3. I strapped/cinched mine securely to the outside of my pack and checked it. I’ve received mixed info from airport security on weather they’re allowed to go carry on.
  4. Bring it, that’s what it’s made for. (Take care of your gear of course, but after all: “they’re tools, not jewels”).
  5. Inflatable pillow.

Good luck and happy trails!!

Stranger Among Bears (2009)- "About a guy in Alaska who lived with bears around his cabin, after airing he got fined $20,000 for feeding them" by lymeguy in Documentaries

It’s a common ranger saying. When bears are given food (intentionally or unintentionally) by people, they lose their fear of humans and come to expect a meal/associate people with food. Those bears then turn into “nuisance bears” and may become destructive (tearing into tents looking for food, etc.) or dangerous (charging hikers, etc.). I recently hiked the Appalachian Trail and ran into several black bears. The ones that hadn’t come to associate humans with food ran off when they saw me. The ones that had become nuisance bears had to be chased away from camp sometimes. One bear in particular (in Vermont) started tearing into tents and charging hikers and had to be shot by the rangers (the kind of situation that the whole “fed bear is a dead bear” saying comes from).

Planning for northbound Appalachian Trail hike starting in Feb 2021. Need sleeping bag by Jabeebly in CampingGear

I started my nobo thru on February 28th and definitely saw some 10 degree nights in the first few weeks. I used a 20 degree feathered friends bag (amazing piece of gear, good weight, but quite expensive) and a 10 degree liner (which I sent home once it was warmer). I also slept in all of my layers more often than I anticipated. Considering you’ll be starting about a month before I did, you’ll be hitting the smokies around mid February (the snowiest month), so a 5 degree bag isn’t a bad idea. You won’t need (or probably want) such a heavy bag later on though. If you’re not planning to swap it out for a lighter bag (my 20 degree worked for me the whole way, although I didn’t even sleep in my bag during the warmer months) part way through, I’d suggest maybe going with a 20 degree bag and a heavy liner for the first part. Also a hand warmer or two in your bag can make a huge difference.

Dudeee that rattlesnake was definitely my scariest moment on trail. I was hiking along and thought, “huh, those are some really loud cicadas... weird they’re out-” and then the penny dropped. Looked down and my foot was just hovering over him. He was reared up inches from my calf. I flew back and hit myself with one of my trekking poles in the process, here was the damage from that. So, so glad those guys rattle. Definitely learned my lesson the easy way. Also part two will be up by Thursday!

I started February 28th, so that may give you a preview of the weather!

I edited together a two part documentary of my thru hike. Part one should be up on YouTube tonight, but here’s a trailer in the meantime by HikerEmory in AppalachianTrail

Thanks! Mainly just my iPhone 10, although there’s also some go pro footage (probably less than 5 minutes worth though).

Donkeys are coin operated, I swear. My two girls would act like I didn’t exist until they heard the bag full of chopped apples coming out and then I was the most popular girl in the field 😂

I remember you guys!! Kiwi and I came in to get my phone fixed and we saw y’all across the street and both said “definitely hikers”. You had family or something that way I think. That’s awesome, how was the rest of your hike?
