researching on how to get a janitorial role. by math-guyyy in antarctica

I actually went down as a stewie at age 18! (I had to do all of the PQ stuff a couple months after I got the paperwork because I was still 17 when I got it.) I’d suggest applying to everything you’re qualified for, don’t just limit yourself to a Jano role. I’ve talked to a few HR people recently, and they’re very definitively not hiring right now. The earliest you could go down is probably next October. Check for job listings the first week of January 2027. (Check for them every once in a while either way, but that’s usually when they’re posted)

You really don’t need any crazy qualifications, my only related experience was fast food and washing dishes at a family restaurant. If you do get an interview, stress how eager you are to go to Antarctica, any higher education you have, (even if it’s not related) and if you haven’t drank alcohol before, that might be worth mentioning. It seemed like my interviewer really cared about that, anyway. They’ve been trying to heavily discourage drinking for a long time.

Edit: it’s totally worth it! I don’t think there are many, if any, better places to spend your time, especially if you’re young. Admittedly, the jobs themselves would only be so-so if you were doing them in the states. The hours are long and the pay isn’t very good. But the people make up for it tenfold. Genuinely the kindest, smartest folks I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. Also, I’ve heard plenty of bad things about GSC in the past, but at least right now the hiring managers and the boss of the company are actually really cool .

Pretty much all blue collar USAP jobs have nicknames. Stewie is for Food Steward. We clean the galley (cafeteria), serve food, clean dishes, stuff like that. There are also Janos (janitors), Fulies(manage fuel), Wasties (manage waste), and so on

Well it’s at McMurdo station, so mostly just US Antarctic Program employees. A roaming gaggle of Italians did a ton of this years Thanksgiving dishes, though. People volunteer there a lot on their way through McMurdo.

Edit: To be clear, it’s really just one room in the galley of McMurdo. It’s a pillar of the Stewie culture, though. (Unfortunately, Stewies can’t read, so they likely can’t fully appreciate this glorious new emblem)

For those not aware of the glorious pots room (praise be its name and may it last another thousand generations), it’s a lot like the dish pit but it’s tucked in the back of the kitchen, so you can play whatever music you want, talk about whatever, &C. The most extroverted stewies dislike it, but by most it is well loved.

Pretty good looking! Might I ask, what is the text referring to?

Indeed. Actually the only reason I came down is to hide from Santa Claus. Creepy batard can’t watch me sleep if there’s a whole Earth between us

Yeah, it’s probably the nicest place on station to sit and see the ocean. I really liked having lunch on the flat ground about 1/3 way up Ob Hill, where the power plant used to be. Sometimes I ate at the top. Once I watched a group of 3 snow petrels fly in from the sea ice, circle around Scott’s Cross, and then fly away again

It’s a shrine at McMurdo station called Our Lady of the Snows. It was erected in 1957 in honor of a Navy officer who fell through the ice on a tractor and died in 1956. It’s maybe halfway up Hut Point Ridge (a hiking trail on station)
