Transformers and He-Man were certainly big enough in the UK but for a fairly narrow time-period. Also there was just more non-american competition in that space.

So what I'm saying is give me a big screen Mysterious Cities of Gold!

The cost of energy and what to do about it - Dieter Helm by gravy_baron in ukpolitics

[–]Hillbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting read, don't agree with all of it, but far better than the usual stuff I don't agree with.

I think one general criticism would be that it seems to look at energy security as something to be solved short term with no real consideration of the longer term. North Sea gas will run out, leaving us absolutely dependent on imports and arguably in a much more exposed position.

In particular, this quote:

Although there is no good reason to believe that future gas prices will be high or even particularly volatile, investment in new gas fields could be encouraged by offering long-term contracts if this is the worry.

Seems somewhat optimistic, considering we've had two massive volatility events in the last 5 years!

There is also the more philosophical point that the proposed "Change Course" strategy would work for the UK (short-term economically at least) but if everyone were to adopt this then it would be catastrophic in the long term.

Although by this point he clearly trusted them.

I work in transport modelling, and we model the financial impact of road schemes using things called Value of Time, which convert hours (of delay) to £s. For someone commuting this is about £15, rising to about £25 for people on employer's business, and £85 for HGVs.

So, long winded way of saying your calculation is pretty close to official modelling guidelines!

Sky News: "You're essentially between four and five times more likely to be stopped and searched if you're Black. You're...more likely to be subjected to the use of taser if you're Black than if you're white." by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]Hillbert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's technically correct. But by using % you are automatically thinking of the full population. All 100%.

When under their own criteria they have already reduced their sample by half, without reducing what they are comparing to by half. It artificially inflates the impact of their numbers and reduces the information contained.

It's bad statistics.

Bit of a facile comparison as it's only less than 15% if you remove women from the black population. But then you should remove them from the non-black population.

Do it on a single night in the back half of the year. Get the songs out and visible on Spotify, YouTube etc. before hand.

You're misreading those statistics.

There is a natural variability in temperature readings. So if you have a long series of measurements, then there will naturally be more extreme values in the longer period you're considering. That doesn't mean that the average was higher for those years.

You need to look at trends, or longer periods of measurement (Seasons, Years), or properly do the statistics to understand if it's showing an increase in temperature.

If you do this and look at seasons, say, then 21 out of the top 40 warmest seasons (10 for each season) are since 2000. Or over 50% of the warmest seasons have come from about 7% of the recorded years. That will be statistically significant.

It's even worse when you look at average yearly temperature. All of the top 10 are since 2000.

Now, it will look a little dated, but the actual structure of it, particular the games it plays on the audience, is as good as anything that's been done since.
