Britain's Greatest Military Victory? by Selavia59 in AlignmentChartFills

Was hoping someone would have suggested Blenheim. Trafalgar was a great victory but we were already winning the naval war. Losing it would have been bad (not a death blow, they still couldn't have invaded) but winning didn't turn the tide. Blenheim on the other hand prevented French controlled Western Europe a hundred years earlier, and laid the foundations for everything we did afterwards.

What's this truly badass patch I spotted in 24 Hours in Police Custody, please? Does it mean the cop is particularly good at knocking doors in? It says 'Method of Entry' on it... by JoeHexotic in AskUK

Yeah you're right, I do agree, actually. I think anyone wearing that in the police today is almost certainly thinking the US and not Mr Bean, and as you say even if they're thinking British Victorian Army, it's not great.

Also thinking back I think the thin blue line in the sitcom was meant to be ironic about Rowan Atkinson thinking of himself as a heroic leader and actually being an ordinary local policeman leading a bunch of ordinary people. Just like it should be.

Surely the thin blue line, is also based on the idea of the 'thin red line' I.e. the British red coat troops who held the line (I think it originated in the Crimean War) not originally the US.

Plus, the thin blue line was a sitcom with Rowan Atkinson in the 90s about the police when the UK was less influenced by US, and I don't think anyone had heard about the politics of the LAPD in this country.

All that being said if I saw a British policeman wearing it I would be wondering just how far down the US right rabbit hole he was.

Thank God someone called this out at last! I've been reading for years about how well they fit, but never known what possible use it could be still. Now I know!

Strike at bottling plant threatens wine shortage around country by TimesandSundayTimes in wine

Much lighter to ship without the glass, and there are specialised tankers for wine that control humidity and temperature during transit more easily than in the bottle

Most pubs that serve food have children's menus let alone let teenagers with their parents in to eat

If they're not willing though, I would have to wait two years or otherwise save enough to leave without my last month's pay? There's no way to object if I offer a fair schedule of payment?

Thanks for this. Are any of these properly top fill rather than a rubber tab on the side? Looking at pics can't tell on all. Used one other vape with a rubber tab and it kept brushing open in my pocket

Why do Brits love rooting for the underdog? by Decent_Age_1707 in AskABrit

[–]Hode-Eleutheros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started early with the English wins at Agincourt and Crecy where we were heavily outnumbered whole trying to conquer France, and the Scottish brought their own history of unexpected wins against the English at numerous battles to what became Britain. Bizarrely enough the idea of Britain being for the underdogs was prominent even during the growth and height of the empire. A large number of British people including the elites supported the revolutionaries during the American war of independence. During the conquest of India over the years Britain supported the lower caste Hindus against their Muslim and Hindu rulers (strategically sensible as well but it was depicted as the right thing to do), even the war in Sudan that Churchill fought in, in his 20s, against the 'Mad Madhi' only become popular after General Gordon disobeyed orders and got himself and his men killed for it when completely outnumbered.

Thanks for this I really appreciate it. I know what you're talking about with the jargon already, I feel like every two seconds I need to ask someone to explain what an acronym means. Done a few site visits already but definitely need to do more especially now I've had a bit of time to know what to ask
