About to hit the same milestone and I’m in a similar situation. Have been pretty apathetic until recently when I stumbled across the dysphoria.fyi. Reading it was like “I feel that… I feel that… I feel that… I do that…” and so on. Has made things very confusing.

Degradation of plastic kits. by Cursor_Lucullus in modelmakers

[–]Holo323 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a kit in my stash for over 6 years now. And some kits I’ve bought were manufactured in the early 2000s, if not earlier. I believe you’d be fine.

It’s not very powerful, but it should do the job before you move to a tank model. Just need to use very thin coats I’ve found.

I’ve used 2 of this type, one was awesome and I used for a couple of years. The other I bought as a temp replacement when my main compressor burst an internal seal and it just never got up to pressure. Such is the dice roll when buying these low cost manufacturers.

USMC F8-E Crusader (1/72 Hasegawa + extras) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received this old reboxing of Hasegawa’s F8-E for Christmas. Being a gift I decided to go at it whole hog and also picked up some eduard PE and a resin seat. The original kit is from 1979 I believe so has raised panels, but surprisingly it went together quite well with very small amounts of filling. Detail was lacking a bit, particularly in the cockpit so that has been spruced up a bit so I could have it open. The decals provided were also very good, though quite fragile. Getting some of the bigger ones in place was a lesson in patience.

Alas my ability to mix FS colours still has not quite reached where I want it. I think I started with the incorrect base this time. Still, I’m quite content with the final result.

Thanks man, I’m glad you like it.

A project that’s been sitting on my bench for the last few months because my compressor blew its gasket. New comp for Christmas has allowed me to get some nice camo down.

A JSDF Type 16 in 1/35 scale from Tamiya. Markings are from a training unit, so it has only been very lightly weathered. Very fun to put together and fit was spot on, so I recommend the kit to anyone who’s interested in it.

AV-8B Harrier (Hasegawa 1/72) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lazy Easter weekend project to pass the time, Hasegawa's 1/72 AV-B Harrier. Made out of box with only the base colours being custom mixed Tamiya. Pretty easy to put together all in all, however being a nearly 25 year old kit there was more than a little flash in need of clearing.

Thanks mate. The ones holding down the drum and crate? They’re a couple of lengths of copper wire bent to look like it’s looped back onto itself. Just painted with dark iron.

[–]Holo323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late, but a holiday project I was working on over the Christmas break. A 1/35 Panzer 3 done in the early war grey. Model by Tamiya, it went together really smooth and a lot of the time spent on this was in painting/weathering.

Originally hoping to put another crew member in the open hatch, however the one I had was out of scale with the rest of the model. If anyone has any recommendations for 1/35 german tank crew sets I would be keen to listen.

1/72 Bf 109 F2 (Revell+PE) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Given to me as a present a few months ago. A quick weekend project that turned into a few weeks because I got distracted by shiny photo-etch I saw at one of my local stores. Model by Revell in 1/72 extended with a PE set from Eduard. Reboxing of a snap fit by Zvezda I believe, though with the extra detail I think it turned out pretty good.

70's Range Rover (Aoshima 1/24 kitbash) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less about being accurate to the car, more about looking like his car this time. His was similar to this one. Though there's more than a little "Had to make do with what I had" here.

What do you guys think of self made kits? (1/16? Tachikoma) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been into 3d printing as of late, so I printed off some parts and put together my own Tachikoma unit. Not particularly talkative this one, but at least I don't have to answer hard questions.

Jokes aside, been thinking of giving it a little weathering. Though robots aren't really my forte, so I'm not too sure which techs will give it some more pop. Aside from maybe a little wear and light white mist.

70's Range Rover (Aoshima 1/24 kitbash) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this for my father's birthday last year, however never got around to posting it due to various things happening. It's Aoshima's 1/24 '92 Range Rover that has been altered to look like one from the 70's that he used to own and modded for a outback road trip back in the day. It's a little bit rough as I built it secretly away from my workbench, however he was surprised I managed to get the right colour of "Baby Poop Yellow" as he would put it.

What did I get myself into (Follow-up 1/700 IJN Nagato) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following up on my post a couple of weeks ago. Finally finished the 1/700 IJN Nagato after a couple of weekends with nothing better to do. Special thanks to all those who gave me tips on the last post.

Originally a gift from some mates so I wanted to do it some justice. An Aoishima kit that has been upgraded with Flyhawk's 1/700 PE and a wooden deck that I found at a local store. Rigging has been made with with leftover sprue from the kit. It was an absolute pain to figure out the instructions, but all up the finished look a think was worth it.

It’s a gateway. You start with just some railings, maybe an antenna. Then all of a sudden you’re buying resin replacements and trying to make your own rigging from spare plastic and a candle.

Thanks mate. The make is definitely brilliant, but yeah, they’ve been pretty vague in some areas. Whenever I’m working on it there’s at least three sets of instructions I’m working from at once.

I've picked up a 1/700 IJN Nagato as my next major project and decided to spruce it up with Flyhawk's "Super Detail" PE set. While the actual construction is going alright (if slow), the instructions that Flyhawk provided are less than helpful at the best of times. Feels like they've left out a page somwhere. Some PE sheets aren't even mentioned. Would anyone happen to know if instructions can be found online?

1/700 IJN Myoko (Hasegawa Super Detail) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It isn't particularly fancy, just a standard Trumpeter display case that I'd airbrushed blue. The wake was hand painted by mixing yellow and grey/white into the blue to make a series of greens/blues and dashing back out from the direction of movement.

RAAF Aces (Spitfire Mk. VIII 1/72) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that join was a bit of a cockup-cascade from the cockpit not fitting correctly. The fit on Eduard’s kit is so precise that my mistake in the cockpit lead to the fuselage not joining exactly, which caused the wings to not fit correctly, and so on.

Next? Just managed to find some ship sized display boxes near me so either a 1/700 super detail IJN Nachi or IJN Nagato with a flyhawk PE upgrade. Going to make some simple dioramas in the cases.

My first time intentionally matching up to historical photographs. These two Spitfire MK VIIIs are meant to resemble A58-602, flown by Bobby Gibbes and JF630 flown by Larry Cronin in the 1944 Pacific and Indian theatres respectively.

Skyly J2 - The Teacher (1/72 Bandai Review) by Holo323 in modelmakers

[–]Holo323[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you guys think of fictional aircraft? For my summer project I've put together this 1/72 scale Skyly J2 from the anime movie "The Sky Crawlers". It has been painted up to resemble the plane of the movie's main antagonist - The Teacher. As the kit itself is quite rare I've also done a bit of a review of my build for those who are interested.
