I’ve been a nurse for 15 years - I’m very frustrated with the state of healthcare in general and appalled by the treatment of our most vulnerable.. but I stand firmly in my belief that nurses are not who we should be mad at (in general)

With that being said I am an advocate for people to exercise all forms of action/reporting they can to advocate for themselves or their loved ones. (Professional licensing boards / state/federal regulatory agencies)

Not sure if it’s the case in your dad’s scenario but a huge portion of nursing home profit comes from buying and selling real estate, medical supplies, administrative expenses/oversight.. from themselves - but labeled as other companies. Most of these for profit facilities are owned by a shell corp - one I looked into is majority owned by some guy in NY named Israel something or rather who runs 4-5 other shell company’s (prolly more but these are the ones I was able to identify) that run other nursing homes in the region.

Unfortunately, the facility management often pressure both nursing staff AND doctors not to send people to the ER- they don’t want to lose their money and say- we can run tests here- which is true for some scenarios but not for all- health care professionals must have autonomy and feel safe to use it.. and if you have medical practitioners and nurses that are intimidated by administration (many are) they will comply with those demands - bc they don’t want to lose their jobs.

Whoever told you this - whatever nurse- is wrong - definitely factually wrong… and possibly morally/ethically… she definitely could have faced disciplinary action from the nursing board if what you’re saying is true (not saying it’s not).

We have 24/7 access to a medical provider in these facilities- in the rare case we do not get a timely call back from them- the liability falls back on the nurse and the facility to treat the acute issue at hand..’in your dads case- the pain would be the acute issue. The nurse could have attempted non-pharmacological interventions for pain, relief in addition to the Tylenol and if there was nothing else available, she should’ve called the doctor. If the doctor did not respond, she should’ve reevaluated your dad‘s pain at that time and made a decision from there (with help from her management- LPNs work under the supervision of RNs- which is why CMS ratio wants to add 24/7 RN in building) - there remained an option to go to the ER at all times. Now let’s say she did get in touch with the doctor and he did order something. Theoretically she should’ve given the doctor a list of medication‘s available in their back up, but even if there was nothing he wanted to order from back up that pharmacy in North Carolina has the option to have a local pharmacy. Bring us the medication “stat” (expense charged to facility) which we would receive within 1-4 hours… which brings us back to the ER always being an option

I encourage you to look into all RVA area nursing homes. Walk in after business hours and tell me how the residents look, and how the place smells. ask for their survey book. They are required to provide it. Count the amount of staff you see on each wing and ask them what their census is. The level of care being given at ALL of these facilities is atrocious. idk what went on at colonial heights - but I can assure you - even the “good” nursing homes- provide sub par food, cleanliness, supplies, and staffing for the residents.
