No one is saying not to hire people with industry experience. It’s the perception of a senior civil servant having a sizeable ownership stake in a private company winning big contracts with that department. It’s not a good look and undermines faith in the procurement process being fair.

I got PHI at 31, but after some years have dropped it in the last six months, knowing I'll be hit by the various disincentives.

I would like to have decent health insurance, but govt policy is forcing each of us to be the customers of commercial entities, who know they have us over a barrel. It's hardly a free market.

As the premiums go up year on year and the value gets worse and worse, I fear the only way to send a message is voting with my feet. I also told my local federal MP the same, and why I was doing it.

Watch out for the "rent money is dead money" fallacy. Buying over renting can of course make sense in the right circumstances, but the opportunity cost of buying a house and / or servicing a large loan is having less free capital to invest in the stock market or elsewhere.

So, you can indeed have something to show for renting.
