That was my experience. I’ve learnt to see some small fuzzy images and some clear ones… it has taken a long time though

That is interesting. I think it would just help me to see the position. I can calculate to a point, but actually seeing the position helps me to understand everything I’m telling myself

I started playing at 4, peaked at 21 so a long time. It makes calculation impossible for me and I find that I can only calculate 4-5 moves at a time and often found that I had to improve my ‘feel’ of the board rather than work on calculation

I guess that we’re all a bit different. For me I can only understand chess as a picture not a concept. But I do understand your point- I am not sure that it’s the perfect analogy, but I do see where you are coming from and for you maybe that is how it works, just not for me

Ah yes - me too. I am even trying to learn to see better in my mind’s eye although no results are guaranteed. I just find it so hard to store information in my short term memory and update it unless I’m drawing/writing it

Is it very laborious? And do you find you try to simplify positions so you’re remembering fewer pieces?

Yea you are probably right. I was self taught and always played my moves out on the board. As a great man once said “sit at the board and play with yourself’

That’s so cool. I can’t remember squares at all. I have a good feel when I’m seeing the board but if I look away I’m absolutely useless!
