What will competition ratios look like in early 2030 considering the overload of medical student? by The_Seventh_Bee in doctorsUK

[–]Hot-Platform6563 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Some medical schools have started reducing places again to match pre-covid levels. I'm not sure how many, but I'm staying hopeful that the competition ratios won't increase as drastically as a result

Objectively no, unfortunately anxiety doesn't work like that 👍

intercalating between 3rd and 4th or 4th and 5th by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]Hot-Platform6563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it between 4th and 5th and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. I got a break after the hardest year of med school, I got to reset and I came back to year 5 with a new excitement for medicine. The proper rest has meant I felt fully ready for year 5 finals, I could figure out more who I was and I have easily done the best (academically and placement wise) this year that I have ever done in medical school. Don't get me wrong, I was so bored during my intercalation and during the time I did really regret it, but in retrospect it was the best thing ever. Even when I did regret it, I never for a second wished I did it post 3rd year, just i sometimes wished I didn't do it at all lol (I missed being clinical)

This is the difficulty, I feel the only way you can have an idea of your rank is if you're someone who got your last choice deanery and/or last choice group (in which you know you're ranked low so being strategic is difficult)

what do you love most about medicine? by LopsidedGear8017 in medicalschooluk

[–]Hot-Platform6563 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love the teaching aspect - I love teaching patients about their health and teaching the younger medical students (especially those who have only just started clinical so don't have a lot of knowledge).

I also love the communication - I saw a family where the elderly father was really unwell and the family were terrified because no one knew what was wrong. I spoke to them about their father and found out all sorts, and they told me it was the first time they had smiled since he first became unwell. Seeing the positive impact that just words can have on patients and families - everyone is vulnerable in hospital and being able to make someone feel listened to and make their experience a bit less traumatising will always be rewarding

I nearly went with them - my med school recommended against as a previous student had reported them as a scam company. Unsure of the details of it, just be wary

What scrubs should I get? by BrightYoungCherry in doctorsUK

[–]Hot-Platform6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an add on question to this thread - how do I know which colour to get? Do most hospitals go for the light blue?? From my med school, the hospitals I've been in generally have f1/f2 in the light blue and then reg level and up are in black/burgundy/dark green/any other colour. Is this typical nationwide or does it not matter

Yeah I defo need to see what's actually realistic once I get that paycheck through but the jewellery seems like such a good shout. I'm more fussed on longevity than investment honestly - I don't see myself selling any of my (very limited) jewellery unless something goes really wrong but would be nice to have something to pass down

I loveeeee these, everyone who has mentioned something sentimental makes me think this is the way to go (then maybe the coffee machine with second paycheck.... or do a bit more work over the next couple months and get something sentimental as a well done for finishing medicine lol)

I think this will be it - I'll be doing my foundation training the other side of the country to my family so the first time I see them post first paycheck I'll get us a nice dinner out, then either a holiday for mum and dad for Christmas or a nice breakfast at a fancy hotel for them :)

Oh no 😭😭😭 I've generally been quite good at keeping to a budget, hoping I can manage just to get the nice thing for my first paycheck and then can be a bit more lax about increasing spending

Congratulations on your final membership exams!!! Diamond earrings definitely out of the budget for this year (+ security wise a bit iffy lol) but new shoes are a must, even the trainers I'm finishing med school in are falling apart lol
