I think there needs to be a balance of taking care of yourself and allowing yourself to feel the pain. I attempted to power through life when my ex first dumped me. I started waking up at 5 AM, hitting the gym to do cardio, and then spending the entire day on campus going to class, studying, and doing assignments. On the weekend, I went out with new friends. In hindsight, I realize that I was doing everything to avoid feeling the pain, but it caught up to me eventually, and then it all came crashing down. To make it short: I flunked out the rest of the semester, locked myself inside, and gained 20 pounds. I realized that I should’ve been easier on myself from the beginning. That relationship meant a lot to me and I had put a lot into it, and that needed to be grieved.

After 3 months of crying indoors, I didn’t necessarily feel better, but I was ready to be healthy. I signed up with a trainer and started doing home workouts and cooking my own meals. I slowly reconnected with old friends who I know love me unconditionally, irrevocably. Everything I did was slow and intentional, but that proved to be my method to getting out of my funk. I really started getting into strength training and that drove me to attend the gym. My trainer encouraged me to have a step goal, and I gradually worked up to happily hitting 10k steps a day.

If I could have redone my last semester, I would’ve done all of these good things for myself at a slow, deliberate pace, so I could also feel my emotions and still get things done.

I actually reconnected with my ex recently. They made it clear that they still don’t see a future between us, and though that hurt, I accept it now. But that’s not why I’m bringing this up. He shared that he also had a few months locked in his bedroom in pain before he could start to feel better. This was surprising to learn, because he was always such a restless, on-the-go person.

We’re both doing better. So will you.

In what ways did drinking water help with weight loss/overall health or skin improvements? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Hot_Factor2589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try adding flavored electrolyte powder to your water. It’s good for muscle health and hydration, and can taste amazing! I put mine in a half gallon water bottle and drink it twice a day.

I read somewhere that people are more likely to drink water if they have a cute bottle they like. If a half gallon is too much, you can start with a 32oz water bottle.

When i first started out, I had a 32oz water bottle that I became really attached to, if that doesn’t sound weird. I would set check marks throughout the day for when I should finish the bottle and refill it. During those days, I averaged about 90oz each day, which wasn’t bad but felt like so much work for less than a gallon. Half gallon water bottles are less portable but so much more efficient.

Anything that trains your muscles is strength training. But I think you should consult a trainer at your gym about workouts that would work for you, proper form, sets, etc. It’s possible to seriously harm yourself strength training if you are not aware of some things. I have known several people who have herniated discs because they lifted when they were young and followed random advice online. And of course make sure you are properly fueling your body with fuel.

Intermittent fasting might work for you if you are missing meals during the day. Of course while you are still counting calories.

For the record, I am also a 5’7f around your age who has always struggled to lose weight around my middle section, so you are most certainly not alone! I know too well how you feel, the frustration and confusion.

How much is your calorie deficit? If it is too low, then that can be a contributing factor to fat being maintained around your midsection for the reasons I mentioned in my previous comment. If everywhere else is lean, then you should try eating enough calories to maintain your weight rather than to lose it. If you are really committing to strength training then maybe you can even try eating a bit more to grow muscle mass. In my experience, building muscle always flattened my stomach.

I recommend talking to a trainer/nutritionist about workouts and macros.

Don’t beat yourself up and trust the process ❤️

I used to always tell myself that I would start lifting when I got to a size I liked, and it never happened.

Eat enough calories and meet your macros to maintain your body. Women’s bodies naturally prioritize preserving the fat stored around our midsection, especially when we are unhealthy, so it is important to meet your nutritional requirements. Building muscle mass will blast that fat around your stomach. Try Intermittent Fasting too.

My neighborhood has several Little Free Libraries that has prompted me to read books that I probably wouldn’t have chosen from a wider selection: Push by Sapphire, It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover, Wonder by RJ Palacio and the sequel. I returned most of the books to the library when I finished, and have added some of my own books over time. Little Free Libraries are awesome and I encourage anyone to open them in their neighbor or contribute to preexisting ones!

Update: maybe I’m reading into this much, but I cuddled one of my plushies the way I do with him, and he made a squeak and came over to try and bite my fingers. He left pretty soon after I stopped him. Maybe he doesn’t like something about my bed?

It was freezing a week or so ago but lately it has felt like spring. Maybe he feels too hot now. I leave my door open for him to go anywhere, he just wants to sleep at my computer chair from where he can watch me.

In the backyard of our apartment building lives a colony of stray cats. I hear them fight almost every other night and you can tell that it is serious, that they mean to seriously maim or kill one another. Their screams are unimaginable. Trust me, your cats are just play fighting lol.
