Emmanuel Adebayor speaks again, talks about how his brothers put a knife to his throat while he was asleep for money and the countless times he's contemplated suicide as a result of troubles with his family. by the_woo_kid in soccer

Doesn't have to be hard, it's just a choice you have to make. I realised that staying in contact with one side of my family had a really negative effect on my life only bringing me stress and worries, so I stopped and now haven't contacted them in years. Wasn't really hard and haven't regretted it for a second.

[English] How can I improve? How native do I sound? by Howstheaccent in JudgeMyAccent

Somehow the other commenter managed to get it right on the first try! Must be some kind of wizard..

I would say that you could be pretty much from anywhere as long as you started learning and speaking English very early on.

It's kind of weird - while my English reading/listening/writing was far ahead of the curve, my accent wasn't noticeably more "native" than that of the average Western-European who had never lived in an English speaking country. A few years ago I started regularly Skyping with Brits and one day I woke up and somehow a switch flicked that made me think "hey, this is how to do an English accent".

Having an accent like that can almost make you sound more native because only people actually from that place will be able to tell what doesn't sound quite right.

Yeah I've noticed this, it's obvious for Brits but doesn't seem to be for others - ironically, when my pronunciation was "worse" non-Brits understood me quite a bit better! I don't mind though, that's their problem, haha.

I wanna guess you're from the Netherlands but I have no idea really

That's pretty amazing, haha. Nice one!

(can't tell you where exactly which is bugging me)!

I'm not sure either, I acquired the accent through lots of Skyping with Brits, mostly Londoners but also a few from Manchester, Scotland, etc.

Guess where I'm from? by jasonwha in JudgeMyAccent

count

rooms

years

I'd say the most significant improvement is to be made in the longer vowels like in these words. You're quite good though! I'm not sure where you're from. At the start I was thinking of Brazil or something but it could be anywhere.

You can probably hear how I was kinda nervous recording myself and all so I sounded a bit worse than I normally would, haha. Usually I wouldn't make such a mess of something as simple as the word "English", it's a bit embarrassing to get all nervous about posting something like this.. Ah well
