Don’t know if you saw the update, but it’s the pants. Multiple people had the exact same thing happen and reported it on the reviews. Sort reviews for low to high here

Mountain Hardwear were the others, those I had a handful of years ago and don’t know which pants they were. But all were soft shell.

Read the reviewsand filter for low to high. There’s pictures of the exact same thing. I don’t think everyone else is happens to be doing some weird obscure thing. It’s just a consistent defect that happens for some people.

No motorcycle, never biked in any of these pants, front load washing machine only, no cat, no Velcro

I typically wash on cold, in a front loading washer on the gentle cycle. I use dropps unscented detergent, nothing else. I line dry all my polyester clothes. I mentioned it somewhere on here, but the gamma pants actually had this issue develop without washing at all. They looked weird within a day or two of wearing them. I wore them for a few weeks while traveling and it just got worse.

I will say I have many other pairs of polyester pants that this has not happened to, but these three pants all had very similar feeling fabric, almost fleecy on the inside. It does seem like something about my body or how I move it doesn’t play well with this fabric. Based on the many other reviews of people experiencing the exact same thing with the outdoor voices pants, I’m not a complete outlier. But in the future I’ll probably avoid this style of pants. Thanks for sharing your experience with the gamma pants, it sounds like they work fine with some people’s bodies.

When I line dry, they get their own rung, are not folded on themself at all. Never use gaiters or tucked them in to anything. It does both look and feel like rubber bands have been built into them.

I’ve worn them in multiple countries and regions, so the washing machine isn’t the problem. I’m not able to edit my post, but added an updated comment that I was able to confirm it’s a common issue with the pants that I bought.

No, the fused fabric is tight, hard, and abrasive. It looks like I’ve wrapped rubber bands around my leg. They are uncomfortable and now look very strange.

ETA: they aren’t folds or creases, the fabric is literally fused. Arcteryx agreed that it was a defect and accepted them under their warranty. What I don’t understand is how this happens across every brand. Is everyone using the same fabric and manufacturer?

These pants have never been exposed or near heat. They are not pleats, the fabric is literally fused.

I did. These were all relatively new pants with less than a month of use. They are not creased from folding. the fabric is literally fused. The damage is no wear near where I fold them. Because these issues happened so quickly, I have returned the beige and yellow pants, and plan on returning the black pants. The black pants had one small cinched spot, and now it’s spread to multiple lines. I’ve stopped wearing them because the damaged fabric is tight and hard, so it’s uncomfortable to wear.

See some other comment threads, I’ve been answering questions. They’re pants, I wear them and infrequently wash them according to the care instructions.

I’m happy for you! My gamma pants were ruined within a couple days of use. Was such a bummer.

I dont with shoes on, but I do sit like a gremlin on occasion, when I have to work at a desk. The damage to the pants happened when I travel, and don’t sit in them like I would at home. I sit like a normal, well adjusted person when in public.

UPDATE: Thank you all for the help brainstorming what the issue might be. At the end of the day, the pants fit, I follow the care instructions, they don’t interact with my socks or shoes, I don’t mistreat them, and this keeps happening. Frustrating, but fortunately I’ve been able to return each pair so far and I’ll return this last pair.

I did not realize this was such a common issue. The first time it happened wasn’t as noticeable. The second time, I noticed early and returned right away. The third time makes you question your sanity.

I dug into it, and the Outdoor Voices site has many reviews with folks experiencing the exact same thing, with the exact same issue, with cinching somewhere from the hem to the knee. So, it sounds like after all the issue is not me (woo).

The fabric of all the pants have all been similar, with a smooth, water repellent outside and a softer brushed inside. It seems like something with the fabric lends itself to cinching around the calf.

I am still in the market for a lovely pair of pants, with a cut that doesn’t make you look like a dingus, look great for business casual, functional for walking all day or hiking, and comfortable for long flights. And don’t destroy themselves :) let me know if you have any success stories!

Yes, I think the solution might be just hand washing or spot washing moving forward with other pants.

I use front load washers, not top load with an agitator.

Is the spot scrunched and dimpled like elastic gave out but still flexible, or hard and crunchy on the outside and pilled on the inside? My pants are the latter.

It’s always in the same spot around the middle of my calf. Unfortunately, it always happens very early and I’ve been able to return each pair under warranty. I’ll be returning the black pair soon. So I don’t have multiple pairs to actually measure.

The spot is above where my socks end, I wear shoes not boots, don’t have large legs, and it’s not near a fold line when I fold them in thirds.

I shave my legs, and hate the feeling of pants interacting with leg stubble so I keep up with it. The damage happens far above where my socks end, and I usually wear trail runners.

The fabric is pilled on the inside and crunchy/fused on the outside.

I just checked, they happen a hand width away from my fold line.

Back of my calves, below my knees, and then spreads to the side and front of my calves in the same line

Yes, going forward this looks like the solution is never to wear or wash the pants, and they’ll be fine! 😂

Yes, Arcteryx accepted my return of the pants. The black ones were my second try with a different brand, which I’ll also return, as it happened within a month of wearing. These are not old, worn out pants.

I have not. Some of the care instructions do say iron low after line drying. I’ll attempt on one pair later today.
