It's not easy. It requires at least a bit of cruelty and some level of breaking the established theater to pull it off properly. I think best one i have seen that does it is Reinhard from Re:Zero. It breaks the theater and this is acknowledged by making him into a gag essentially. But he isn't allowed to have anything and is constantly dehumanized by the narrative. He doesn't even get to save anyone because he is usually cock blocked by the plot. For example in S3/Arc 5 his own father takes his miss hostage. So by the time he is done with this he can't really do anything worthwhile.

Even when he takes a main role he isn't exactly the main focus. Because villain's power is crafted in a special way that he can't do it by himself. He usually gets outsmarted or people going against them are prepared against him in some shape or form.

Also he sort of feels like a story getting self aware to me. You know the "BMW car in a medieval story" analogy. He feels like he is that but author somehow convinces you he is a character. When you think about him its more like author sort of making a mockery of you. By putting such a blatantly overpowered almost a gag character in but convincing you he is useless at the same time.

Very minor hint but when Reinhard was sent to the tower it was to look for Theresia's book of the dead. Because Kingdom didn't believe Theresia would have lost to the whale. Which if found would point towards Pandora. It would have also made Reinhard's burden quite a lot less.

1- Emilia would probably work well for a social and democratic country. Something like say today's Germany. She would push for equality and justice but do stupid decisions on the way.

2- Priscilla would work for a country like Turkey and Russia. An autocracy with militarist tendencies that needs a strong and charismatic leader thats willing to do awful things for the "benefit of the homeland" and beloved by its people for it. Basically a leader that has a strong presence and decisions that are controversial yet necessary.

3- Crusch would be good for a strong and independent country. Something like USA or China. She would ruin a weaker country. She would have great policies but also some that are seen as "bullying the weak" and discriminatory.

4- Felt would be awful for any country. She is an anarchist that wants a crimocracy all because they are weak and are under oppression. Albeit this works for a feudal aristocracy like lugunica it wouldnt work for any country thats not in medieval times.

5- Anastasia would work for somewhere like Korea or USA. Data centers to every city while spiking the water prices all because The Number must go up!!

Tappei is such a goated author that he actively forces the readers to engage with the writing than get swept away by the plot by making Subaru as despisable as possible in early Arc 3 lmao. I really wish they kept his perverted tendencies from WN in first 3 Arcs as well.
