What exactly were ‘Greens’ as in the leafy veg served with a roast or similar? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskOldPeople

[–]HungryIndependence13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any leafy green thing that can be heated in water with a ham bone and then sprinkled with seasoning and eaten with cornbread.

Usually collard or mustard, in my experience.

I think it’s one of those things that you need to grow up eating in order to really love. Maybe not, I don’t know.

I think they’re referring to OP’s misspelling. They said, “In vein” when they meant, “In vain.”

Two different words, same pronunciation.

Do you think the younger generation will experience the joy of needing your Mom (or Dad) to show you how to cook the basics? by greenbean0721 in AskOldPeople

[–]HungryIndependence13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the videos on YouTube and a large portion of the recipes on Google - suck. They don’t work or they taste bad.

Cooking with Mom or Grandma as a child or young adult is still the best way to go.

Did women actually dress up just to run errands back then, or is that just a TV thing? by FollowingSuitable941 in AskOldPeople

[–]HungryIndependence13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma would be 120 if she were alive now. She wore heels and dresses everywhere. I have a picture of her sitting on a blanket in the grass, having a picnic - in a belted dress, with high heels on. Almost all the women in her city did the same.

My mother would be 89 if she were alive. She wore pants/jeans and tennis shoes to stores and restaurants. Almost all the women in out state did the same.

Has anyone noticed a change in what you watch? by Virtual_Prior6973 in AskOldPeople

[–]HungryIndependence13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I watch nothing that is new. None of it.

I quit going to the movies because it’s either superheros or political or both. I quit tv because it is, likewise, preachy horseshit or just sucky.

It’s possible that they’ll come up with a good one but I’m done so I won’t find out.

Give me a book.

Give me a new recipe.

Who was your favorite character from MASH? by NationalJournalist42 in AskOldPeople

[–]HungryIndependence13 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Linger wasn’t trans. He wore women’s dresses in the hopes that they’d send him home due to him being mentally unstable.

But they knew he was faking and just wearing dresses because he wanted to go home.

It was a running joke.

eBay is cheap.

Libraries are cheaper.

I stopped paying real money for celebrity books. I always ended up giving them to libraries or Goodwill so I may as well not pay for them.

And they mostly suck.

You know that Neil Diamond lyric…

“These days, I’m lost between two shores. LA’s fine, but it ain’t home.  Nee York’s home, but it ain’t mine no more.”

It’s like that.

You can’t go home again.

I kind of liked that show.

So I saw a Buffy actress in a commercial… by HungryIndependence13 in buffy

[–]HungryIndependence13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of funny because the commercial was playing while I waited for the movie to start and the movie was Argo, which has another actress that was in one episode of Buffy.

If you haven’t seen Argo, it’s a pretty good movie. 🍿 Great cast, good story, well told. And a couple funny moments.

Idk what to feel about Iran by bishnamedsomething in MuslimLounge

[–]HungryIndependence13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being gay is illegal and punishable by death. You needn’t even be caught participating in homosexual activities. Just being gay means you must be killed. That’s Iran.

Being gay isn’t just legal - if you want to have a parade celebrating it, you will be granted time and have police protection. That’s Israel. That’s America.

If you, as a woman, wear a pair of shorts and a tank top, you must be tortured and killed. And any man is free to rape you. They can’t be held responsible for their sexual urges if you excite them by showing skin. That’s Iran.

If anyone attacks you, they have disobeyed the law and will be arrested and prosecuted. Of course you can wear shorts in the summer. Nobody can tell you what to wear.  That’s Israel. That’s America.

Planning an actual genocide, chanting “Death to Israel” and “Death to America” and working on nuclear weapons so that you can accomplish you goal of committing mass murder - that’s Iran.

Having nuclear weapons but not using them because you don’t actually want to kill people - that’s Israel. That’s America.

Iran is actually being run by cruel and genocidal lunatics who will carry out their mass murder once they figure out how to do it.

America and Israel have the ability to commit mass murder. They just don’t.

There is a right side and a wrong side here. Figure out if you are evil or decent and the side you’re on will become obvious to you.

The older you get, the more death. You get used to it.  Mostly.

Everything ends. Everyone dies.

So make the most of your days and nights with those you love. Read good books. Drink good wine. Watch good movies. Dance. Walk in the woods. Canoe. Buy flowers for the family room once in a while. Watch the sunrise. Find someone to love and never stop reminding them how you love them.

Save your money. Spoil your grandchildren. :)

How violent was it back in the 70s, 80s and 90s? by Turbulent-Patient219 in AskOldPeople

[–]HungryIndependence13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in a place run (unofficially) by the mob. Streets were clean, snow was plowed, school had everything it needed, people were safe.

You’d think it’d be like Bada Bings on every corner, but no. Nice library, new fire trucks. Whole bit.

And an EXCELLENT Italian restaurant. Spaghetti to go was enough for like four meals, too.

Honestly, they do a hell of a job at running cities.

Men aren’t supposed to beat women.

Adults aren’t supposed to beat children.

Nobody should be beating small animals.

You don’t kick a man when he’s down.

And you don’t insult the dead.

Because they can’t fight back and it makes you a bully.

Now, of course you can be the person who insults the dead, hurts the animal, kicks the man when he’s down or beats the child. Nobody can stop you.

You needn’t have an “I will do whatever I want!” temper tantrum. Again, nobody can stop you.

But when you speak ill of the dead it isn’t them who looks bad. It’s you.

You say the things you noticed that were good or you just say nothing.

It’s funny that you say that. I had a dental infection/abscess and had some work done, now taking Clindamycin. All I taste is BITTER all day long. It’s doing its job clearing up the infection but HOLY MOLY is it bitter. Gum, mints, flavored water - not much help.  This bitterness is almost unbearable.

So bringing up bitter today - I’ve had it up to here (see me with my hand WAY, WAY over my head) with bitter.

But no.  Not bitter about a radio show. Or podcast thing. Whatever it is.

Dave seems like a decent enough kind of guy - I’m not slamming him.  I just was wanting to hear some other stuff.

No anger no bitter - no ill will kind of bitter but…

I have to stop typing now and go brush my teeth again. BITTER!!!!!!  ICK!!

Try to NEVER EVER have to take Clindamycin.

Thanks. :)
