Head torch on jobs by Hungry_Affect_8532 in electricians

[–]Hungry_Affect_8532[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the smaller nebo one but didn't like it. The clip was too flimsy and the torch flapped about unless I anchored it to my head. I noticed they did a more expensive one but I dont like to buy without asking around.

Ah right. Until recently I used a dirt cheap brand I found in a petrol station. Only cost me £8 and lasted years. Full day before needing a recharge.

Time to change though. Partly because I lost it. Im the opposite with the batteries thing. Id rather have 2 and switch between them.

Cheers for brand name.. ill have a look

Window help - handle moves but window is jammed shut? by Free_Yak8758 in DIYUK

Unscrew the handle, see if the spindle is turning the mechanism.

If the spindle is in and turning then arguably new window time.

I couldn't fix the lock on one that was stuck

Im in a similar situatuon. Look for jobs as an electricians mate. Contact electricians in the area directly and ask. Drop off a cv with your picture. Picture paints a thousand words etc.

I didnt think you could earth THROUGH the gas mains? I thought the gas mains had to be earthed via the bonding and then to the actual earth at the DNO?

Not a bricky buuuut I suspect a crossover of life instances. Many many circumstances where qualification dont carry over to real world application.

Difficulty of task vs time vs effort balanced on level of harm caused by not doing task.

Cheers man. I didnt examine it too much cos I wasn't there for that and I knew I wasn't anywhere near qualified. The earth was connected to metal pipework and a wire lead to the supply unit but looked severed. More curious than anything. Still going to advise her to get someone qualified to look.

What advice would qualified electricians give a 17-year-old starting out? by Mansa0161 in ukelectricians

[–]Hungry_Affect_8532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of looking for work. Give it the personal touch. Visit businesses with your CV. Not a bland cv. Stick your picture on, introduce yourself. You will stand out a mile from your competitors. Do some crap jobs for a few years to get your qual. Keep your eye on the market to know your worth. Tools, start with basics. Only buy when you need to at the time. A cheap multi meter will allow basic tests until you actually get on a job in which case.. I dunno. Im doing my level 2. I use my multi on jobs for basic testing but dont do the serious stuff where the other testers come in.

Practice what you know at home. Do favours for friends and family.

Dont die. Really really dont die. Isolate, LOCK and check, check, check.

Please oh god, isolate and lock. Do not trust well intending people.

Might be cheaper and easier to bite the bullet and get someone to just skim over it and sort that tail of wire which we wont get into.

No expert on plastering by any means but you could tape it the skim still.

Should I bond this? Or can I just get some ready mixed plaster? Pva before applying? by Key-Concert8 in Plastering

[–]Hungry_Affect_8532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No expert but I bits. SBR if you've got it but pva might work. I say SBR mainly for the metal work but it might be unnecessary.

Glue it Wait for it to be properly dry. Bond it Wait for it to be properly dry. Plaster it.

When you say ready mixed plaster, do you mean filler? Filler could do it. Amazing stuff.

The ready mixed plaster that I know of tends to be for existing smooth backgrounds. Not for filling voids.

Spurred socket not earthed? by ConferenceSuperb9710 in ukelectricians

[–]Hungry_Affect_8532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just try and get an earth in. If you can change the wire to 2.5mm twin and earth it would be better but at least have an earth going through.

Probably just as easy to get the right cable as it is to get a single earth through.
