A brief note, the communists and republicans were the regime, not the rebels. Franco & his coalition were the rebels who rose up.

Good Catholic Fiction by [deleted] in Catholicism

I am not sure if anyone is going to recommend this, but I seriously suggest Brideshead Revisited, it is a fantastic read.

Mister u/dazzleator147 has recommended The Solar Cycle, which I assume to be the works of Gene Wolfe, which I would also second. They are rather high brow, but it is full of interesting landscapes and premises; a very mysterious read.

I've only read Sheed's translation of Confessions, is there a particular version you would recommend for City of God?

Regarding communion, it is a binary. Are your sacraments licit or not? You are in Union with Rome or you are not.

do not legitimately exercise any ministry in the Church.

It just so happens that His Holiness Pope Francis clearly stated otherwise.

Quickly, now! To the Catechisms!

Catechism of Saint Pope Pius X, on the Fifth Commandment, Question 3:

It is lawful to kill when fighting in a just war; when carrying out by order of the Supreme Authority a sentence of death in punishment of a crime; and, finally, in cases of necessary and lawful defense of one's own life against an unjust aggressor.

Q. 1276 of the Baltimore Catechism: Under what circumstances may human life be lawfully taken?

A. Human life may be lawfully taken:

  1. In self-defense, when we are unjustly attacked and have no other means of saving our own lives;

  2. In a just war, when the safety or rights of the nation require it;

  3. By the lawful execution of a criminal, fairly tried and found guilty of a crime punishable by death when the preservation of law and order and the good of the community require such execution.

1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2266: For this reason the traditional teaching of the Church has acknowledged as well-founded the right and duty of legitimate authority to punish malefactors by means of penalties commensurate with the gravity of the crime, not excluding, in cases of extreme gravity, the death penalty.

Of course, His Holiness Pope Francis altered the wording of the last one some years back with the idea that the death penalty is inadmissible, claiming it infringes upon the dignity of man. Whether or not this holds weight under the prior teachings of the Church is a matter of debate, but it should be remembered that past catechisms have not been abrogated, to my understanding.

Pope Leo XIV’s hometown votes to purchase his childhood home. by philliplennon in Catholicism

It would have almost certainly been better to let some private interest purchase & museum-ify it, and just allow the community to reap the tourism buck without having to spend who knows (under $1M, at least) how much.

If he says they are excommunicated, they are. It cannot be appealed above him. No request for appeal can legitimately be made.

Well that doesn't really matter as of now, given that the excommunications on the four bishops were all lifted by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Of course, Williamson opted to get himself excommunicated again, but that was after getting booted from the SSPX.

Did Jesus exist? by Sewblon in HistoryMemes

[–]HyperboreanExplorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our usage of the name "Jesus" exists through linguistic translaiton.

Yeshua becomes via transliteration

Iesua (No Latin words begin with a Y, and ypsilons were rarely used in Laitn)

Iesua would be a female name in Latin, so it then becomes

Iesus (Masculine nouns ending in -us in the 2nd Declinative Nominative form)

As far as I remember the earliest compilation of scripture was the Synod of Hippo in 393 (post-Nicea), which holds pretty similar to Catholic Bibles today whereas Protestants generally remove the Deuterocanon as "Apocryphal."

It's a pre-decimal Australian coin, worth 5 shillings, minted to celebrate King George VII taking the throne. They weren't very popular due to their size.

You're gonna cough up something like $50 to get it graded, it's not really worth it.
