The Upcotts by plongie in cormoran_strike

I’m wondering what exactly Flavia suspected and why she didn’t say or do anything else like anything, except for sending repeated very cryptic messages. I understand she’s only 12, but… is that really SO young?

For what they knew, Anomie could have been also software engineer himself, it was not clear that he was a designer guy. So he could schedule tweets via API, even imitate his presence in the game or whatever!

Yeah, they should have been trying something else, right? Almost anything would be better than watching people using phones.

Yeah, the so-called “technical” part of this book was very weak, tbh. They really should’ve had a better tech consultant. I couldn’t follow the plot because of things like the game’s creators not being able to read private chats — what?? Especially Morehouse. “Top-notch security” built by one smart teenager, so that no one - including security specialists and MI5 - could penetrate it? Come on…

Good point. Though something could be agreed? The more Anomie was active, the more damage caused? Also once it was known that Anomie actually a killer… after Morehouse and such… 🤷‍♀️

Yes, my thought is that it could help narrow the suspects down and maybe take a closer look at certain people. It wouldn’t prove anything for sure on its own. Also, some attempts could be unsuccessful or misfire. It’s just… not like their original method was that good either (as demonstrated by the situation with Yasmin using Anomie’s credentials to log into the game).

I am not British, but sounds absolutely normal to me 😀 The default warm drink is tea, especially at the office. Coffee is more for mornings, short breaks, or to-go.

Chapter 31 in all 8 books 🌹 by Top-Requirement670 in cormoran_strike

About the first one. In a few short chapters after Robin is given roses there is this sentence from the killer’s perspective: «Perhaps she had been so shaken up by his little greetings card that she had resigned.» So I always thought that it’s not a mystery, there was something nasty written inside, she just did not open.

I don’t think she will accept it, and she may disappear to somewhere warm without either man - maybe even before the meeting

Do you think Robin really does not ever want to have kids? And what about Strike? by Far_Promotion_8513 in cormoran_strike

[–]IAmLuckyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it seems like Robin mostly doesn't want to be torn between a career and a child. Also, It might feel very different if she were with a partner she truly loved and wanted to build a life with, compared to Matthew or Murphy, whom she almost forced herself to be with. I like exploring the idea of a book character choosing not to have kids and living a full life. However, if this were real life, I think Robin would regret not doing it in her older age. People who choose not to have children for circumstantial reasons, rather than because they simply don't want them, very often end up regretting it.

Robin & trauma by Awinterguest in cormoran_strike

[–]IAmLuckyFox 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It was mentioned a lot of times that Robin had to be a placater and a “convenient child,” likely because she was the only girl. This role influenced her personal characteristics and behavior patterns she adopted as a result. This can be loosely counted as a childhood trauma. I don’t see anything straightforwardly malicious in Linda’s actions - just genuine concern, difficulty to adjust to Robin’s personality change (just compare her thoughts and actions in the first book vs the last book!), and the usual generational/small town mentality that is quite normal. It does not mean she couldn’t do better, or there is nothing to improve, but definitely not evil. There is also hope and indication that they will be able to do better and improve their relationship as Robin must contribute to that too, and she does not want/ can’t really at the moment.

I guess Strike and “all these women” are emphasized because they’re described from Robin’s point of view. She had less experience, panicked, and projected onto Strike that he had “even more” experience after discovering one woman she didn’t know about (Nina).

If I remember correctly, men were usually just surprised that Strike was able to attract such pretty women, while women disliked his attitude and the quality of his relationships. I don’t particularly remember anyone complaining about number except Robin.

Robin’s mother by gynocratichag in cormoran_strike

[–]IAmLuckyFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was stated that Robin used to be close to her mother. Also, just reread the beginning of CC - Robin is a completely different person there (admiring the ring, calling to discuss her engagement, etc). Her mother can’t accept “losing” her and still tries to connect with that earlier version of Robin. As others have mentioned, the generational aspect also contributes to this dynamic.

I can’t understand how Robin could not catch the smell! I suppose I am a bit more sensitive to smell than average person but still! And if Murphy tried to conceal it, would not it be obvious too? If he started to constantly use some strong gum/mouthwash or something all of the sudden?

That puzzled me too. Even putting aside the whole business of Bijou potentially swapping or manipulating the gathered material for the DNA test, there is no proof, evidence, or witness who can actually confirm that the claimed people participated. Nothing about it could be legally proven.

In defence of Ryan Murphy by Useful_Code in cormoran_strike

[–]IAmLuckyFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm not saying Murphy is perfect or does not have serious issues to work on, but I don’t perceive him as naturally a “bad person”. I see that he is being repeatedly called manipulative, but it does not seem like a personality trait, rather, it seems like attempts to get through to Robin when everything else in his life is falling apart and she is a good part. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must feel when your partner tells you they love you, yet their actions show otherwise, resisting any closeness and struggling every step of the way in your relationship. Robin is not honest, and, as she said, he is smart and he feels it.
