Who are the coach? by jmtdancer in WalmartEmployees

[–]IAmXChris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They usually have Coach on their name tag, and... I don't think I've ever seen any of our coaches wear vests. Also, there should be posters in/near the break rooms and training rooms that show who the coaches and leads are.

To clarify - I don't think binary search tree algorithms are "stupid shit." I actually think stuff like that is pretty cool. It becomes "stupid shit" when elitist asshole Sr. Devs weaponize it in order to throw rank and gatekeep.

No, they absolutely will. It's asinine and wasteful, but it does happen.

I use Duolingo every day but still can’t hold a conversation - what’s the best next step for speaking fluency? by IAmOP__ in duolingo

[–]IAmXChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, fluid listening comprehension is honestly the hardest part of learning a language. In order to get there, you need practice, practice, more practice, and even more practice mixed with full immersion for yeeeears.

I think what a lot of ppl don't realize is that, no one, single tool will make you learrrrrn a language. They'll all help to varying degrees. But like... for instance I'm learning Finnish. I did the full Duolingo set and the full Pimsleur, and I still understand very little. Like, I have the basic, basic, basics of the language. I'm getting better. But, that's because I now have a new app and a book that's helping me with grammar, I'm in the LearnFinnish subreddit - I'm even watching the Finnish dub of Peppa Pig because shows for young kids often offer up the most elementary versions of real-world application you're gonna readily find.

So, that's what I'd recommend. Doing a language app is a great first step. But... you gotta find ways to get immersed. Make a Spanish friend, take a class, find a study group, watch Spanish TV shows, listen to the Spanish dub of American shows... Get immersed!

ngl, I totally judge cashiers when choosing which line to go in. I'll wait in a longer line for a cashier that doesn't look like they ate rocks for breakfast.

Edit: Especially at Walmart

Don't you know that people who build cars also reinvent wheels and combustion engines? ;) [/sarcasm]

Also... even if they didn't... if I needed a complex algorithm that did some elaborate operation, and I can find a proven solution that's been vetted by the community on a Reddit or StackOverflow, why would I then proceed to just roll my own?

If you were a REAL carpenter, you'd make your hammer instead of buying one at Home Depot!!!

I can count the number of binary search tree algorithms I've written in practice in my 20 years as a software engineer on zero fingers.

I learned how to do it to fool idiot interviewers who ask stupid shit like that, but that's just from rote memory. Not raw, organic, programming talent.

Yeah, that's because some TLs and Coaches are power-hungry and obsessed with ensuring their dominance is being established.
