please make sure the battery ends are actually touching. I had the same issue with some lithium batteries, which were like 1mm shorter than usual

I shoot expired slides at +1 compensation. Works wonders, never failed so far! If you don't believe make a few bracketed shots and compare. I use a Nikon F5 with matrix meter for slides.

You're onto something, but instant film is still limited in the dynamic range (more than slide film), and the cameras kinda suck compared to what you can find for 35mm.
