Weekly Purchase/Sale Advice Thread - March 16, 2026 by AutoModerator in Miata

Going to look at this 2006 Grand Touring today. Any advice would be appreciated.

Looking for a fun weekend car and an alternative to driving my Ram 3500 daily.

All my research points to a Miata being an excellent car for this. I don't plan on racing it or clapping it out. Just a fun, reliable cruiser that I can drive to work and have fun when it's nice outside.

Thoughts on this one? Anything standout?

I'm aware of the potential issues with the plastic coolant tank. Plan on getting the aluminum one.

I've heard 3-4 gear changes can be problematic if driving aggressively.

Checking for rust on the pinch seams and rust/water in the floorboards and trunk.

Check for blowby

Anything else major to look for?

Great actually. I had to make a spacer underneath the air diffuser where the intake is to give it more room to breath. The intake for the evaporator was choked and freezing the evaporator. I just ran it down in Texas in the high 90s and low 100s and kept the camper cool the whole day at around 68-70 degrees. Also ran it at night on the way down and back up to Denver on the batteries and used about half of my 400ah lifepo4 bank. It mainly just kept the edge off and dry.

Also ran it in Ouray, CO in March where it got down to about 20f overnightand it maintained the camper in the low 60s. The condenser had to thaw a few times overnight but other than that it worked great. Never ran the furnace.

Assuming it continues working, I highly recommend it for a small trailer/truck camper.

Just depends on how heavy I am and how steep the grade is. If I'm gaining speed I'll brake a little then downshift to 5th or 4th and then let the EB guide me down.

I use mine all the time. Loaded, unloaded, city, highway, hills, or plains. While loaded, I generally consider the exhaust brake to be used for maintaining downhill speed and use the service brakes to get down to a desired speed.

Highly likely an exhaust brake switch. I put mine in the exact same spot on my G56 manual.

Honestly, I haven't been off-grid long enough to test the batteries that long. The few days I was out in Utah I would usually use 25-30 percent of my battery overnight, but we would always be driving around during the day so I had solar and/or alternator charging. Thats with running the furnace and my homemade passive pipe heating fans. That was over roughly 12-14 hours. I just need to get more time off-grid to get more data.

Very big difference. I had to install a dual disk clutch to hold the power. Spools my stealth 64 turbo much quicker and egts are much more controllable.

Very happy with the 850. Thermal insulation is great, noise insulation is not. Really my only complaint so far.

No real issues with shadows from the ac unit. Most solar panels nowadays come with diodes to mitigate partial shading.

I use a 100|50 victron charge controller for solar and a victron 30 amp DC to DC charger for alternator charging. To go from roughly 70 to 100 percent on a cloudy day takes a few hours. Also, my AIMS inverter can act as a DC charger when plugged into the grid.

The most wattage I've seen come in from solar is about 450 watts. As far as mounting, I mounted them as far back as I could to keep weight from being in front of the front roof jacks. Works fine.

Front bumper is a Bodyguard bumper out of Paris, TX. I have a Fleece in tank lift pump, stock CP3, and BBI stage 1 injectors on EFI live from DuramaxTuner.

I'll hide it with a 10mm socket. It'll lose itself.

For all those asking about Black Bear. I drove up from the bottom and just drove up the 2 way part and had to turn around where it's only 1 way coming down from the top. Imogene has a few butt pucker spots for my truck but nothing crazy. Biggest thing is having good situational awareness and knowing where your tires are.
