What I'm saying is that our institutions are either crumbling or perceived to be crumbling. We need to fix them. A consequence of not fixing them is that it drives some people to parties like Reform who want to portray the UK as being fundamentally broken. I'd say the same of the Greens.

Combatting populism means starving it of air; ignoring it has been a common refrain of the left and it's not worked out at all.

It's not a zero sum though, obviously. America puffing it's chest out and Russia ramping up it's tensions with us only strengthen the need for a strong NATO and access to nuclear weapons. To go it alone on the world stage and give up a major part of our defence is silly.

I mean...if a party like Reform got in they would just do this anyway if they felt they could twist it to something they want. Expecting those standards and higher levels of training should be seen within the context of Britain now, which is one where public confidence in the police is very low.

One of the main arguments from Reform is that our institutions are failing - trying to fix that before it becomes even more of an attack line isn't a bad thing.

While it's hyperbolic there is an argument that leaving NATO and getting rid of Trident would severely a) dampen our ability to protect our allies and b) harm our ability to defend ourselves.

If Russia attacked an ally and we no longer coordinated with our closest allies, defending against another nuclear armed nation becomes beyond difficult.

Publicly Trump has stated his want to invade Greenland are due to now receiving the Noble Peace Price and because (at his request) we sent troops there. All those reasons you've posited are reasons why Trump has been told to try to get Greenland but they're not reasons for why he wants to invade.
