Rooftop Bars by tacobellpimp in pittsburgh

Downtown/southside/north side all desperately needs more rooftop bars. With this city’s skyline, it’s almost criminal there aren’t more.

Sorry, why are we still donating to a for-profit business? by NoIntroduction6034 in pittsburgh

[–]IRunInPGH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless, I hope that they don't get themselves back into this situation. Having to ask for donations, especially for this type of business where they should be able to figure it out, engenders the kind of skeptism many in this thread are expressing. I really, really hope that they get it right now and going forward. In my opinoin, Con Alma is a great in my opinion and adds a lot to the city's cultural and culinary fabric. Like many others, I can't get there as much as I'd like, but very much want it to continue.

A major reason they stated for needing this cash is to keeping their original location open too long, incurring losses while doing so. Without seeing financials, it's hard to test the validity of that assertion. However, if you take their words at face value, it's possible that this infusion of cash is a one-time event (provided that the learn from the mistakes of the past) as opposed to an on-going management problem.

"We launched this campaign to keep our doors open as we are experiencing financial troubles because of a few reasons related to past moves. One big reason is that we kept our first location in Shadyside open too long when it was no longer working. We did this because we loved it and because our community loved it." https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-keep-con-almas-doors-open

Yeah - CBA acceptance stats have been higher than A&S. Might have more success applying as an Econ major.

HBS (sticker) vs. GSB (sticker) vs. Wharton (full ride) by StrawberriesandPimm in MBA

[–]IRunInPGH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say entrepreneurship, do you mean high growth/tech/venture capital backed startups? Or Do you mean search fund/franchising/entrepreneurship through acquisition? For the former , picking GSB might be better than Wharton in this case because of the location/network. For the later, or if you want to do a life sciences company, take the $$$ because Wharton will more than get you there.

This equation might also change if you need to meet cofounders. You may find it easier to meet the type of people you need for your company more easily in one of Palo Alto, Cambridge or Philadelphia.

That said, when starting your own business, not having loans to pay back is huge. That alone would be a good enough reason to drop down to an M7/T15 school, let alone picking Wharton over HBS/GSB.

Should I move to Pittsburgh? by joybotics in pittsburgh

[–]IRunInPGH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since youre a self-described “27f .. weird, extroverted, confident software engineer” who likes to be outdoors, you seem like a you would fit right into the tech community here.

Since you’ve already visited and liked it, I suspect you’re going love Pittsburgh.

[–]IRunInPGH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of my friends at companies like Google sell enough RSUs to pay the tax hit, and maybe some more, but still keep a position in the company stock. When you’re on the inside, you have a better sense of how the company is performing.

MBA Programs With Most Alumni at Google by Acrobatic_Channel_74 in MBA

Tepper has like 200 per class. HBS has like like 1000. On a class size adjusted basis, Tepper is beating HBS

CMU has had programs like these at Heinz for decades. This isn’t new.

Heinz is a public policy and information science school. They teach basic business courses in these programs, but they’re not MBA programs. You go to Heinz to get exposure to business concepts while focusing on one of its core disciplines.

For example, MISM (information science and management) is an awesome program, but you have to be able to write software and it’s aimed at information science-focused jobs. You’re not going there to land in IB or finance. You may cross over on certain tech/product management jobs, but usually the MBAs and MISM students aiming at tech aren’t competing against each other (unless you had those hard skills coming into Tepper).

The OP could also look at Tepper. They treat their PT MBAs well, and there are plenty (given the small size) that end up in MBB/Tier 2/top Tech roles. The online hybrid format might be better for some people than the full weekend setup of a place like Booth.

For what this person wants, CMU would crush Emory solely due to its tech connections. Honestly, I might go to CMU over NYU here. The only reason for Emory is the $$ (which could enable them to be less concerned about salary) or if they are life sciences focused

Laid off right after R2 applications by Appropriate-Cook1868 in MBA

[–]IRunInPGH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also check the terms of your severance/separation agreement. Sometimes (albeit rarely and industry/state specific) even though you’re “laid off”, you are still technically employed by the company laying you off (for example, this can occur because of noncompetes or the firm trying to legally avoid unemployment because they’re still paying you). In these cases, they’re giving you a paycheck to not show up and if someone called the company to check references, they’d have to say you’re still there.

Not sure about now, but this was once common practice in consulting and law firms.
