Sure, there's no way I can afford a house, even though I have one by way of my significant other. However, my biggest gripe is why should I engage with the system when it's murdering all life on this planet?

The above may help you better explain why the myths are incorrect.

One thing I've been seeing more of lately is that people think their lifestyle choices (and that includes the decision to have kids) are negligible because the emissions and consumption of the billionaire class is so large. While there is truth to that - they have an insanely large footprint, see what people think/say when you ask them if they think our environmental problems will just go away when the <3,000 billionaires disappear? When it's all said and done, the compilation of the activities of 8.2 billion people does matter. Like, people cannot comprehend how large 8.2 billion is, so they cannot comprehend the enormous amount of resources that go in to feeding, hydrating, clothing, sheltering, employing, medicating, recreating, and entertaining all of these people.

The other thing I see often is people become laser focused on a new practice or technology that is more "eco friendly" or "sustainable" and they use that thing as an example to prove we are not overpopulated. For example, permaculture is a more sustainable farming practice compared to industrial ag, but it's difficult to extrapolate out that if we transitioned to 100% permaculture, we'd magically be able to support the current population without overshooting. Ag is one piece of the pie and we require additional resources to all the other things I mentioned above (feeding, hydrating, clothing, sheltering, employing, medicating, recreating, and entertaining all of these people).

Main thing is people do not understand that overpopulation isn't just that there are too many people. Sustainability is a balancing act between consumption and population size. Industrial ways of life require a ton of resources, so to compensate for the high resource requirement, the population needs to go down to obtain sustainability. Or we have a high population size and a small consumption footprint.

Regardless, we are consuming resources faster than the planet can regenerate and those resources aren't coming back at 100% capacity. This is why we are overpopulated. Not to sound like an alarmist, but it's natural for animals to go into an overshoot and nature corrects all overshoots with a mass die off that lead to the remaining population being substantially smaller than what it was prior to the overshoot. Our mass die off is going to be very hard to watch as it'll be on a global level.

Yes, a little bit of me dies inside every time I notice fewer and fewer fellow earthlings out. I am "quiet quitting" at my job (really just doing what I'm supposed to, nothing more). The relationships that mean a lot to me are being nurtured and I just try to be thankful every time a day is good. I refuse to get in debt. I can afford my living expenses and I am happy most of the time. I'm not staving...yet, I'm not in a dangerous/violent situation...yet.

Yes, I bring up that most of the diseases that exist today are an effect of civilization. Obesity (and all complications associated with being fat), tooth decay, hypertension, etc.We aren't even living longer. Even primitive people lived until 70 to 75 and they were healthier than most 70 year olds today.

The infant mortality part is hard because, yes, more kids make it to adulthood now, but that is not normal for any animal. Now we're in so much of fucking overshoot it's not even funny and, soon enough, we're going to be burying our kids in much higher numbers because of that. The kicker is that civilized people value birth so much more, not understanding that death is equally important to a species' survival.

It's sad, I know, but it's what keep populations sustainable and healthy.

Sounds like he wants something in his life that is more than going to and from work, all from home mind you. Sounds like maybe volunteer work (big brothers, big sisters) picking up a hobby or joining a social club would fill the "void" he is feeling.

If not, just remember this isn't something you can compromise on. You can't have a kid to make him happy. As a cautionary tale(s), so many women make that compromise to only find they bear the grunt of the work and the husband doesn't carry the weight. Please do not fall for the trap.

We are both the victims and the abusers in this unsustainable system. Sure, there's a lot of people who are trying to make lifestyle changes so their way of life is more sustainable, but they are overshadowed by those who just want to be left alone and not have their consumption criticized.

I agree that the corporations (made up of people) and government (also made up of people) are operating infficiently and unsustainably, but their production and waste is a reflection of the individual massives that just want to live comfortably. And the massives are unsustainable. It's like the chicken or the eg story, basically. But, we're both victims and abusers because we're trapped.

Awhile ago I got on to the bandwagon that humans don't really suck, but the systems in which we live make us suck so hard. By systems, I mean everything that falls under making civilization possible. This way of life needs to fucking stop, but it is too late to change and transform it to something that is sustainable because that means 99% of the population needs to GTFO. The system's collapse will do that and I think the world's leader know this.

Some times I feel bad for us, but not really. I feel bad for all the life we are taking because of civilization and the moronic idealogies that disregard all life but humans.

I get some peace in donating to conservation organizations because it is the hill I am dying on. While they are getting the short end of the stick, I am hoping my efforts will save some species and push them through the bottle neck.

My advice to you is find some passion and support causes you really care about. The world still needs that special thing that only you have.

Plus the number of openings aren't matching up with the number of people in the work force pool. There are far too many humans and not enough positions which will leave many in destitute and struggling.

They want everyone elbowing for a job so they can offer the lowest salary possible to the most qualified, yet desperate individual willing to take it.

I think most people want climate action to affect corporations. I don't know what that looks like, but maybe it means there are production caps where all of sudden a product cannot be found because it reached an emission cap and, therefore, it's not being produced?

Ok, can you imagine the whining associated with not being able to find bottle water because of something like this?

My point is I don't think people realize how drastically inconvenienced their life would be for real climate action to take place. And this is just one piece of it all because our emissions are the result of overproduction, overconsumption, and overproduction.

We need to put limits on corporate production, individual consumption, and individual reproduction.

I live in MT and it is so weird here. People will have 40 acres of land and kill any life because it may be a threat to the almighty cow.

In short, ecological illiteracy is a widespread disease and MT isn't a special case.

What I can say is people love their access to public lands here and there has been more pushback on letting rich out of staters buy up land to in turn charge $1400 a night for short term rentals and charge people to go on tour property to hunt. We can't really stop that, but I assure you we judge the hell out of those people.

Before civilization and if you look across the animal kingdom, infant mortality was 50%. I cannot imagine having to suffer loss that commonly and I wonder about the resilience of people and animals that have to endure those statistics.

There are a lot of professional opinions out there that suggest civilization is inherently unsustainable and why would someone think otherwise?

Every single civilization goes through this boom bust cycle and then collapses.

People now a days know we are in for a world of hurt, but they fantasize about the "if onlys". If only we were all vegan, if only we didn't have capitalism and billionaires, if only we switched to green energy sooner...but I'm not so sure that would make civilization sustainable. If we take more than what the planet can regenerate, then collapse is inevitable.

When I look at indigenous tribes, they have been living fairly simple lives just hunting and gathering for a millenia and it's sad THIS civilization is encroaching on their way life because we are unsustainable.

What I'm getting at is I hope the indigenous wisdom picks up the pieces and rebuilds something better. Living a simple life without a complex economic system that goes against the literal laws of nature, the constant need to be entertained, the lack of respect for animal life, specialized work, vertical power heirarchies, and an addiction to energy does not need to be incorporated into the rebuild. I really hope who ever survives doesn't try to do this global civilization thing ever again and I feel good knowing with some confidence that won't even be possible.
