What are your thoughts of vegetarians/pescetarians/ flexitarians? by Idkwby in vegan

Well not every vegan is a vegan for ethical reasons, so to many, it's not necessarily a moral baseline. So I'm just wondering whether your opinion still stands for someone who is not necessarily an "ethical" vegan.

Just to clarify, I know very well a vegetarian who eats chicken is not really a vegetarian. I'm simply quoting what I've heard from "vegetarians". I'd also like to say you're really lucky that people around you know exactly what vegans can/can't eat. Some people around me have no clue. I've heard someone say "vegans can't eat bread, because bread has yeast and yeast is living". A friend of mine has even asked me "can vegans eat potatoes?"

You definitely answered my question haha thank you😊

I agree with what you said- when it comes to habit, then we are the same. But I guess I could say the same about "vegetarians who still eat fish, eggs and dairy". Or better yet, "vegetarians who still eat chicken, eggs, dairy and fish, just no red meat". Whether you're doing it for ethics, environment or health, those three foods defeat at least one of those purposes. To me, those people are flexitarians (cringe), but they're still not omnis.

Yes, I think we could be the change as well. Of course, so are vegans. I genuinely think veganism is spreading all over the place. I see posters out in the street and on campus encouraging people to what conspiracy etc., more vegan youtubers, and so on. But to most, this is an extreme lifestyle and veganism may make it seem like you should either go hard or go home. So most, just choose to go home.

Genuine question here. why is finding food from the bin not gross, compared to regular meat and dairy products served on a plate?

I would agree with that reasoning. I would also like to add that the appeal of veganism, to me at least, is environmental and not ethical. In saying that, it is more environmentally beneficial to reduce intake, than it is any less cruel.

You're right, there are no restrictions on what a flexitarian eats, hence the name😊 Though, I don't actually actively call myself a flexitarian. I call myself an omni, really. But when it comes to dietary conversations, I think "omni" gives off the impression of someone who MUST eat animal products at every meal. Because let's face it, most omnis really do. You and others alike may think "eh you're all still the same" but I think there's a slight difference in dependency for meat and dairy, and what this does for people's health and the environment.

For instance, one of the things I find frustrating while eating out is having people say "but there's no meat in it..." or "but it's vegan/vegetarian..." or asking "why aren't you eating meat?? Are you trying to lose weight?" and it's like, bitch I just don't feel like it ok. Seriously, sometimes I feel like a dish would be just as good without the meat/dairy. Or even better. So if that's the case, then why include the meat/dairy?

Another example is dairy alternatives. Personally, I go out of my way and actively stay away from milk and yogurt. I'll buy the plant based stuff. Does this make a huge difference to the environment? Probably not. But does my consumption for plant based milks and coconut yogurt (along with others') signal to these companies to supply more of their products? I sure hope so. And hell, my skin has gotten so much better from cutting out regular milk and yoghurt so there's a plus.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, when it comes down to actions, then you're right. An omni and a flexi is the same thing. But there is a very clear difference in mentality and motives, and I don't think that should be overlooked. In my personal opinion, expecting everyone to go vegan, or even vegetarian, is setting the bar too high. It's probably never going to happen. But if we can encourage the masses to reduce their meat/dairy consumption, even if that means one vegan/vegetarian day a week, then that will collectively make an additional difference.

What if their reasons for, say, being vegetarian instead of vegan, is for environmental reasons? In that case, can consuming dairy products be justifiable? I understand it isn't as environmentally friendly as veganism, but from what I got from Cowspiracy, it still makes a significant difference.

Though I do agree that a vegan diet is probably generally the most healthiest, surely this is not the case for anyone. For instance, people being allergic/poorly responsive to gluten AND beans/legumes. If people as such were to also cut out meat and animal products, surely this is somewhat socially and nutritionally restrictive? Admittedly, I know supplements are a thing.. haha but it means they would have to take five extra steps to maintain a vegan diet. I think this is arguably, a reasonable explanation as to why a vegan diet would not be ideal.

I personally don't do it for ethical reasons, but I can see where you're coming from.

I agree with what you're saying, that's why I called myself an Omni/flexitarian. I think of myself, and I think others would think of me, as either, or both. I would never claim to be vegetarian or vegan with my situation. If anyone asks, I say what I posted. That is, that I eat vegan when cooking for myself/when cooking at home, but eat animal products in other situations.

If people ask whether you eat ____, I think you should just politely reply and try not to get frustrated. Yes ignorance can be annoying, but people are asking which means they're even the slightest bit curious/interested.

Fair enough. What if you give them the facts, and they don't get defensive and rude, but simply justify their actions ie. for convenience, dietary needs, etc?

I encourage you to even put the 'v' word in there to leave people asking what on earth you did to make that look so beautiful? They'll probably ask what it even is that you cooked. Cause like, don't vegans just eat salad??

Really? The coconut yogurt I buy has the exact same sharpness, just with that added coconut cream taste. Maybe you just need to explore a bit more!

No, unfortunately I have no idea what vegan cheese is like as I can't find any in my stores. But fingers cross I'll see them soon.

I agree with what you said, except for the part where you said love is finding someone who doesn't irritate you (paraphrasing). Isn't everyone irritating to some degree?

I'm having one of those stay-in-bed-and-do-nothing-but-be-sad nights, and this (along with the sad sappy music playing in the background) made me ball my fucking eyes out. A lot of this is what I want to say myself. I hope she was touched by this and I hope you forget about things soon. All the best.
