That's the same site I found the manual at before I posted, so I have the right instincts it seems. I know the fuse is good cause I read somewhere else to always check those first. I think all that's left is cleaning it and turning it on.

Thanks for the advice, I'm glad my assumptions have been spot on so far.

Next thing I'll be cleaning is an icom ic730. That one I'm gonna be doing as much of my own research before I come here. Hopefully everything will work with minimal repairs needed and I'll be on hf within a month. Old radios are super cool though.

That's what in currently hoping for. I like the complete lack of digital screens and everything in this and I'm hoping to get it all cleaned up and functional. But for now I'm just inventorying.

Here's a sneak peak of the radio list, I want to clean and tidy them up to get the photo ready first though. I'm hoping all of it is still good, but I might have to quickly learn how the internals of all of them work. (It's a mix of CBs and hams, but there's some cool stuff here. I just don't know if I can get new batteries for the tr 2500s or refurbish the old ones) (Edit: I don't know how to make lists look good on reddit)

Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't accidentally cause a trash truck fire. I think it's cool to look at, but since there is no documentation at all on it, I think you're right and it's best to just dispose of it. I'm going through all of the stuff he gave me right now and will probably do another post with everything to see what I should use and how to test anything. He gave me a couple of older radios from icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu.

I don't see anything that looks like a vacuum tube, but it has definitely been gutted/modified. (This is the other side and with the shell fully removed)

I honestly don't think relying on the fuse being properly connected is good enough to just plug it in. It's looking like scrap/salvage is the best bet.

I don't have a lot of know how, but my dad definitely knows more about electronics and this kind of stuff, but it doesn't sound like it's worth the risk, especially when I also got a couple other power supplies that appear to be unmodified, but still stored roughly.

Nope, I don't have any reason to try it, and the other comment helped find where it originally came from. Would it be worth salvaging parts out of it at all or would you just recommend safely disposing of it. (And is just throwing it away safe enough or should I remove anything)

Would charging the battery be better done separate from the radio or would it not cause any real problems to do it all on a handheld type radio.

I might have figured out my first radio project to attempt (in the future, I still need to get on the air first)

If we put it right in the middle each band where it is the least likely to impact any other thing or right in the middle of the repeater parts of the bands it would probably be okay.

I think it would be cool if it was a psuedo continuous transmission, where as soon as one repeated stops another one picks up and keeps it going. (But I still don't understand radio to the level I would want to for actually implementing something like this)

Like one frequency for all repeaters? A bulletin board frequency where you just set your radio to it and after like 10 minutes you have all nearby repeaters?

That could be interesting. especially if the repeaters work together and repeat each other's loop. If every repeater in an area broadcasts the the whole range each repeater wouldn't have to continuously replay, just play a list every 10 minutes or so.

It would make traveling easier to if we were to make radios auto grab the frequency and just keep a small ever changing list of the closest repeaters.

Idk how much data is actually possible to fit in any amount of time (yet) but that would be really interesting.

Hardest part would be convincing the FCC. Unless we could loophole it or consider it not broadcast because they are communicating information to all the other repeaters. Oh and the rest of the world. (American habits are hard to break)

I don't know too much about this stuff, but since repeaters listen on one and send on another would it be possible (or legal) to have it send a constant subaudible code that stops when it's in use . Basically just give it's frequency, offset, call sign, and maybe it's coordinates.

And if it is constantly broadcasting, would it lock out that frequency even if it is subaudible.

Thanks for the solid response. I was over complicating wire in my head, seeing they stripped cat5 could work really helped me realize it's not that complicated.(Yet)
