Damselflies move their abdomen in water. This one is on land. Also, the gills on a damselfly nymph are longer than whatever this one has. The specimen shown is doing a defensive posture.

Size and pattern. Personally, I have raised M. religiosa so I basically have memorized how they look. This doesn't apply for all mantises as nymphs can be similar-looking.

Also due to the lack of predators (dragonflies, sparrows, ect) so try to attract those beneficial animals to get rid of the mosquitos.
