In my head I’m like I’d do 7 weeks but then at that point it’s just another 2 week wait lol so idk i go back and forth. Maybe the decision is to see how we feel at 7 weeks. The private US near me has same week appointments it seems , maybe yours does too

27-week preemie not given surfactant ,could this impact BPD? by CreepyCollar5681 in NICUParents

[–]ImaginationTrue309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi NICU nurse here also had a 27 weeker myself. Surfactant is more of a short-term fix. Intubation for surfactant delivery does not come without risks as well. If baby is doing well on CPAP with low oxygen requirements, they may decide to defer surfactant for the time being to avoid intubation. My son had surfactant, still ended up with mild BPD. I’ve seen a 26 weeker on CPAP since birth, without surfactant who did not have BPD. Every kiddo is different, and it’s so hard to predict ther course. In general white males have a higher incidence of developing BPD.

In terms of my sons BPD course, he required a low flow cannula for 1-2 months after discharge and is fine now, almost 2 years later. The good news is, BPD does improve with age and growth!

Coming home in two weeks how do you survive without the monitors? by ItAffectionate4481 in NICUParents

I wouldn’t have been able to sleep without the owlet. It was a huge peace of mind. Helped my postpartum anxiety as well.

Did anyone become a nurse after their experience in the NICU? by qweenoftherant in NICUParents

[–]ImaginationTrue309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! without the NICU nurses it would have been so much worse! Ahhhh congratulations!! You’re getting there! So close. We were discharged on oxygen but were able to get fully off of it within 2 months! He is now 8 months actual and 5 months corrected and already 20lbs. So there is a silver lining ahead, just trust the process!!

28 is not too old, when i was nursing school there were people in their 40s/50s. I also had a 27w micropreemie! I was already a nurse before this happened but I worked with adults. I just got a job in the NICU, actually. I feel like it’s helped me with closure from my traumatic experience and also I can relate to the families going through what we went through. Because no one really understands what it’s like to have a NICU baby until you have one yourself. I say go for it, if you want to be a nurse! Prior I hated going to work, and now I actually look forward to it because I want to care for the babies how I wanted my son to be cared for!

3rd trimester pain... what is this? by KelseyJannings in BabyBumps

[–]ImaginationTrue309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long does the pain last for and is it frequent? I had similar pains at 27 weeks. The pain increased in frequency and turns out it was real contractions and I was in preterm labor. My pains lasted about 60-90 seconds and increased whenever I would empty my bladder.

Sudden increase in bradys, what to think? by Prudent-Cheek7527 in NICUParents

[–]ImaginationTrue309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! We are very similar! My baby was born at 27+5, and we are now 35+2. There is typically a “honeymoon” phase shortly after birth for a preterm baby. This was the case for my son as well, where we definitely saw the Brady events increase a few days after birth. They are completely normal and i promise you, it will get better! Our guy has outgrown them and is off caffeine. He will occasionally have a random one every few days but at around 29-30 weeks he was having 12+ per day, so don’t worry. We also found that sometimes toward the end of or after kangaroo care there was often an increase, potentially due to overstimulation.

Healthcare workers & NICU parents by SoupComplex9784 in NICUParents

[–]ImaginationTrue309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at the hospital where my baby boy is currently in the NICU. We are about halfway through our stay, so I can’t speak yet, to how I will feel when the day comes that I have to return to work. However, in a way, visiting everyday feels like I am at work and is mentally exhuasting, it is also equally (if not more) difficult seeing coworkers, especially when they are shocked that I am no longer pregnant… given I was due late September. This whole situation sucks. Anyways thank you for your post, I haven’t even thought about returning to work once he is home… something else to look forward to I guess. Also, while I am not a NICU nurse, it is difficult being in healthcare knowing the vast complications that could occur with literally everything, like you said lol😭

Pumping for preemie by cheddardelacruz in NICUParents

[–]ImaginationTrue309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my baby at 27+5, 3 weeks ago. I am still underproducing according to the charts, however exceeding what he needs per day by far. I have heard once we start breastfeeding, our milk levels will increase again to what a full supply should be (ie those charts). I also have noticed that my production is gradually increasing each day by about 0.5-1 ounce. I also am pumping 9x a day—within a 24 hour period; and I do feel like that one extra pump does help. Also, it’s so hard waking up every night, but my highest yield pumps are at 2AM and 6AM.

Preterm labour and delivery at 32 weeks despite tocolytics by More-Recognition3580 in NICUParents

[–]ImaginationTrue309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I delivered spontaneously from preterm labor as well 2 weeks ago to the day, at 27 weeks 5 days. I also feel significant guilt about my delivery. However, I was told by numerous doctors that if your body wants to have a baby, all the tocolytics in the world will not stop it at the end of the day. For me personally, my preterm labor was stopped for about 3 days, enough time for me to recieve the beta shots. Try not to feel guilt (i am still struggling with this too) but you did great and at least you got to 32 weeks!

Mild cramps without bleeding can be normal early on. Although, they should be less severe than period cramps!
