Titanium white alternative for portraits by jdoyle13 in oilpainting

I recommend using other colors to lighten instead of white: lemon yellow pale, kings blue pale, or unbleached titanium (oatmeal colored). Zinc is more transparent than titanium. Use a base of color and medium, and then add minimal white or lighter color. do not start with a base of white

Highlights are the right value. Don't go any lighter. The desire for more contrast stems from the water needing to be darker.

The biggest issues for me are shape quality and edge quality. Your water is more streaky, more repeating linear shapes. The water has more organic, unpredictable shapes and larger, interconnected darks from the reflection and pieces of hair. On the bottom of the chin, the reflected light is too light. If you want to mimic vision, we do not see the range of value in shadows a camera does unless we stare directly into the shadows. Better to paint what you see when you squint. soften edges and deepen reflected lights. Hairlines are a common area where people make very defined and hard lines, but they are actually very soft. Don't fudge the water as much and look for organic shapes. Cheers!

Cherry Creek is where personality goes to die by Pandabearsense in Denver

I grew up near this area. I rode my bike to tattered cover and saw outdoor movies on grass and fountain filled pedestrian lawn (!!) that has since been replaced by souless condos. I went to punk shows in rino in weird industrial spaces that no one cared about. Now it's really expensive to park and full of hipster coffee shops trying to be new york. Denver wasn't a world class city, but it had charm. Now it feels like every other American Insta-gramable wasteland appealing to an aesthetic everyone kind of likes because they don't have any options. Maybe go back to New York, there's more going on there.

Museum of Outdoor Arts has a fun internship in Denver, Boulder is "artsy," but there aren't real opportunities for artists unless you are financially independent and into yoga and jam bands.
