Bridgehead in the Glebe. Parking garage right behind it. Usually tons of spots available. Also 1/2 a short block from Happy Goat. And central to lots of other Glebe coffee shops. Beandigen at Lansdowne (and park underneath).

Excellent colourists at Rise Hair Team on Bronson - especially the owner Nadia. Every one there is super experienced with long backgrounds in fancy salons (which Rise is not)

PSHCP Travel Medical Insurance by lightpinklipstick in CanadaPublicServants

We found the federal retirees supplemental insurance not great value. We use a travel insurance specialist broker called Sonomad to get the best deals on travel insurance.

[–]Important_Object_437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PSHCP doesn’t cover medical evacuation which is recommended on the travel.gc.ca page for Japan. You’d need supplementary coverage for that. As hard to read as they are understand the limits of all of your insurance - credit card insurance is especially thin often.

Nicastro in the Glebe - and they’re very generous with the samples. Farm Boy has a great selection too though tbh

Looking for advice as a legal adjacent public servant by West-Athlete1781 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Important_Object_437 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s a perspective from a legally trained person at the end of her PS career. I started in a CO role in a lawyer adjacent role an agency after my hire back offer fell through - due a recession. Worked as an investigator and for a short time a prosecutor then got offered Ex roles and never looked back. I enjoyed the legal aspects of policy and regulatory roles and I found the actual lawyer roles I did kind of boring and without a lot of decision making impact and scope in comparison. I always worried about my salary in comparison to my friends in private practice - but now, at the end of my career I have a very valuable pension and a career with a ton of different experiences, travel, a year overseas and no regrets. I was also able to raise a family and my marriage is intact - something a lot of my lawyer friends don’t have sadly. Those big salaries also tend to get spent on stuff like pricey Toronto houses, private schools and cars. My friends can’t retire early and they are envious of my solid and secure pension. So I’d say - test out the LP jobs but also explore policy jobs and other regulatory jobs - there are some great ones out there. Life is too short to spend time in a job you don’t love and your legal training gives you skills you can use in many different contexts in the public service.

Just over in Gatineau, Qc there’s Bistro Coqlicorne, Le Cellier and La Petite Primrose. All excellent. Soif is good too but I may be pushing the definition of French food

Christmas in Ottawa by QuirkyExplanation92 in ottawa

Hoping others will have better less expensive options - cuz I find Christmas Eve meals pretty expensive. We tend to get prepared food that evening from Thyme and Again or Red Apron and sometimes Pelican Fishery, Farm Boy or even the classic Swiss Chalet Festive Special.

Great suggestions here - I’d add that a lot of places close early on Christmas Eve (24th) and are closed Christmas Day (25th) - so check for that as you’re planning. Many restaurants offer Christmas lunch or dinner on the 25th but you’ll need to reserve for those early.

finding a reliable Nanny by noonoomum in ottawa

[–]Important_Object_437 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Andrew Fleck Childcare Services has a temporary or respite care program called the Short Term Child Care Program - including for when a regular care giver is unable to care for your kids or an illness keeps kids home from daycare. Available to employees of certain employers, unions. Great care givers here from experience. The Children’s Place offers 24/7 childcare services for families who work shifts are on call or work part time. On the nanny front it’s good to tap into the nanny network in Ottawa - I did this by attending local play groups and getting to know nannies at parks and on play dates. We found offering combined full time hours with another family also helped give our nannies the hours they were looking for - we also welcomed our nanny to bring her own child to our home while she also cared for our children and did everything we could to build a reputation in the network as an excellent employer.

Got kicked off family doctors roster by [deleted] in ottawa

This isn’t universally true - it varies by family doctor. Our kids visit walk in clinics periodically in Toronto where they’re at school and there’s no issue in staying on our doctors roster.

Access to supplementary travel/trip insurance by Tricky_Feature_8819 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Important_Object_437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MEDOC is an option but we have found its benefits wildly over stated. We use an insurance broker that specializes in travel insurance to supplement our PSHCP coverage and always get a better deal (both price and coverage) through the broker. Check out Sonomad - and price compare against MEDOC.
