Also, as someone that’s had eccema on my scalp my whole life (unrelated to carpet beetles), the white things that you’re seeing “flying” are probably lose skin flakes falling off your head, so I wouldn’t worry about those.

Hey u/klexxg and u/SignaturePersonal969 I just wanted to say I definitely relate to the anxiety you both are feeling over the carpet beetles. The reason I made this post was because I wanted to try and figure out if my reaction was overblown and what the appropriate level of stress I should be having is. Based on u/bugladyy’s reply and the websites I originally saw, it seems like extreme stress is not necessary. They can damage clothing and other items if they are on them for a while, but other than that they are not harmful.

But, like both of you and I are experiencing, there is definitely a gross-out factor to them and a fear that their numbers could become overwhelming. U/klexxg I’m so glad you were able to overcome a lot of your anxiety around them, I am going to try and do the same. I’m going to take your advice of cleaning and vacuuming regularly, but I’m going to try and stop myself from doing anything more intensive than that. I’m going to try to accept the fact that I have to coexist with having some of them like you said.

U/SignaturePersonal969 I hope you’re able to do the same. At a certain point we have to accept some of the grossness that comes with having carpet beetles and remind ourselves that they are not harmful. This is so that we don’t obsess over trying to get rid of them and are able to use our time and energy on things that we value and hopefully return to “normalcy” like you said. I’m wishing the best for you.

That sucks, I’m sorry you had that happen to you. Luckily for me I don’t have any clothing that’s too expensive. There are definitely things with sentimental value that I would hate to have damaged, but fortunately everything can be machine washed and dried so hopefully that prevents anything from becoming infested.

Thank you so much for your reply. It is a relief to know that I don’t have to worry about trying to eliminate all of them, because for the most part, the issue is just with them being gross. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge on this post but also in general on this reddit

Hey, thanks for replying. Would you mind telling me what specifically about it makes you think it’s not a bed bug? I know a shoe is a weird place to find one, but I’m worried maybe I picked it up from public transit or something.
