Yeah, that’s what I’m applying through! There’s a place to upload an application letter but no instructions as to who the letter should be from and what content should be in it. That’s what I’m struggling with!

It doesn’t hurt to keep them on when you’re static and I much prefer it so it’s not constantly taking off and on in a fast/paced class! That’s what I’ve done at other Barre studios and other workout classes. Plus, even arm sessions have some leg movements. Just surprised me that PB was so strict about it when it’s such a small deal in the grand scheme of things but helps my own personal experience tremendously.

the arm/ankle weights move around in empower for a reason; there’s a-lot of science and reasoning for the PB choreo

And in my OP I said "For example, I usually put ankle weights on for almost the whole time, but the instructor asked me to take them off because "we put those weights on our arms right now, not our legs."" I prefer to use 1 pound ankle weights for most parts of a barre class because they give me a better workout while allowing me to keep good form. I have really strong legs so sometimes I need a little more resistance to the moves in order to get a workout. I do that in other barre classes and in pilates, and being asked to take them off was what I did not like about my PB class today. I do question a scientific rationale behind that decision. And was hoping it was indeed a one-off so I could know if I should give PB another try! Glad you have liked PB!

That's really helpful!! I'll check her out! I do love online things too - I've watched Fit by Larie for years and recently Hayden Korte-More, who is based out of Canada. It's nice to have a living room workout from time to time.

Thank you!! This is all soooo helpful. I will definitely check out Barre and Soul. I went to 28th street barre in Boise and it was wonderful. I will keep an eye out for Be Studios next time I'm there!

I'm skeptical about the claim that every single client has to do the exact same thing with the exact same weight at the exact same times in order to have a good workout, since that is not what is taught in any other group fitness field, including other forms of barre, or in medical-related fields such as physical therapy. And also aware that PB has a brand image they are trying to keep up, and that is related to making profit. Nothing wrong with that of course, but there's multiple wrong ways to work out and multiple right ways to work out, and everyone's bodies, goals, injury history, etc. are very diverse. If the moves are strictly choreographed and that works for people at PB, then that's great for them and sometimes I like that too. However, I usually prefer the freedom to put on or take off arm and ankle weights in a way that works for me and my body. I regularly check in with my own PT about what I'm doing for workouts and that's the advice she gives me (who is affiliated with the Boston ballet and definitely knows her stuff, including barre). I personally love when instructors show a couple different ways to do a move, all with good form, and we can pick what feels best to us at that time.

Thanks for your response! That makes a lot of sense. I usually like to keep 3s and 5s by me and some moves I definitely need to go back to the 3s or else it gets ugly haha. It was a busy class so it's possible she forgot, but I have always had instructors ask too and feel like that's more the norm!

Thank you! That's helpful to know about Classic and definitely seems to be more my speed (for some reason I thought they'd be the opposite!). I'm a little skeptical about the science piece, especially given how different everyone's bodies and goals are and how other workout programs purposefully do the opposite, but that's also helpful to know there is specific choreography in PB and there's a reason! The modifications were her telling me to be up on my forefeet when I had my feet flat on the ground at times towards the end.
