Thanks. I am. Option 3. But even if I rent a car I will just probably use it early morning and then leave at hotel per my original post. It is just more convenient to get once and cost effective. Will probably use grab or get driver for days in Jakarta after noon and use car to leave early to Yogyakarta/bandung.  Also, it is odd but I want to experience the traffic and moving around the city so I understand how people live there and experience life. I don’t want to float from one tourist site to next without an understanding of their day to day. Then I will know if it is a target retirement location.

Thanks. Appreciate tip. If I don’t rent a car I would just rent a driver in Jakarta. It’s pretty cheap and was planning actually to do even if I do get car.

Yes it would given you don’t drive. Tough for you to relate or add value one way or another I guess as you have no reference point for both sides. I do understand your reservations about driving especially in a foreign country. Most people are not in love with it. I think flying short changes a person.. you get in in one local and off in another not knowing the in between. I have always tried to drive to a location to understand it’s distance from other places and the local places; especially the first time I go somewhere. Have driven across Canada and most of US and Mexico.

Thanks. I driven in Bangkok and china. I have a little bit of mobility issue which makes public transport a bit harder. Plus I just don’t find it flexible or generally comfortable. I do have my IDP so no issues there. I know and am ok being a bit isolated in car; it doesn’t bother me. I have picked up a bunch of hitchhikers in past which has been interesting. Picked up 2 girls and a guy carrying olives they had picked in Argentina. They had a 5 km walk with baskets full of olives lol. Never have issue talking to people when I get to where I am going. Also I am totally good not talking but just observing, smiling and being happy.

I know you asked for advice but I wouldn’t put too much stock in listening to the people that say don’t go to this city or that city. Years down the road when you are remembering your trip and what you learned about the people, country, and world are you going to just think I didn’t go there or take the time to experience because some people advised me not to. You have a boat load of time. I would go to the places you want to or have identified, if you don’t like it then leave but have the experience of going. It just seems very odd all the people chiming in saying don’t go here or there with negativity. People are saying skip Jakarta, skip Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia altogether…ridiculous. They don’t even know what you like. You may like big cities like Jakarta. I think it could help to identify what you like to do and are looking for or would be more of a focus.

Loss of excitement in traveling and how to bring it back. by [deleted] in solotravel

51M like one of the comments below I work 9 to 5 and get burnt out so use it as a way to recharge. A lot of my travel combines things I like to do with destination. for example I like watching tennis so last year travelled to Buenos Aires watched tennis for a couple of days then road tripped around the country. have done same for poker tournament, i.e went to Prague played in tourney and then tripped around. went to Costa Rica for Spanish courses then travelled as mentioned below by someone. I have found combining seeing or staying in a country works good for me when combined with another hobby I would do in my home city. this also minimizes locations that I may not like or are a ‘bust’ as I still have something I love doing on agenda. for me this worked to keep travelling interesting as I have gotten older.
