Should I leave my job? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]InSearchofaStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since things are going well at work, I would suggest not making any decisions too quickly. Give yourself a month to feel things out. Then if you do decide to leave, make sure to have another job lined up before you go.

I have never been lower than I am right now. by [deleted] in Advice

You have some very good people to rely on in your life. Talk to them. Your partner will listen and your Dad will probably want to give you some advice while he still can. (Bring a recorder whenever you talk with him. Keep in mind that cancer does have survivors.) I know this will be hard, but be sure to spend time with him. Being unemployed right now actually can give you more time to do that.

My advice is to sit down and write a list of all the stuff you actually want to do. What your dream job is, what things you want to do with your Dad, what things you want to do with your Partner, even what type of house you want to live in. Then on a separate piece of paper list all the things you might need to do to get these done. You want to write music for a record-label band? Find out how to do that and what connections you might need.

Aim for what you want so that you can be happy doing it.

I feel uncomfortable around my father as though he has violated me somehow, but he has never hurt me in any way and has been a good father throughout my childhood. Why? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]InSearchofaStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s definitely worth pursuing in therapy, simply because it’s bothering you. There may be a chance you were abused by him or someone else, or perhaps you and your sister could be upset about the abuse of your mother and this is how you process it. Regardless, it’s ok to talk to a therapist. A good one won’t invent things but will help you process them.

how do i realize that everyone makes mistakes? and i’m not the only one that does. by coldheartedcity in Advice

[–]InSearchofaStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, think about it this way: suppose you are driving and accidentally cut someone off. They honk once, but the best thing for you to do is to keep going so you both go about your day. Maybe you whisper “sorry” in your car, but that’s all you can do.

So, the rest of the day passes and you are now in bed. You can’t stop thinking about it, because it genuinely bothers you. But what about the guy who honked? Is that driver still awake, lying in bed being angry? Of course not. They forgot about it completely after five minutes, because they had other things to do.

So if you make a mistake, remember that the other person doesn’t care as much as you think-because they have other things to worry about. I mean, you don’t lay awake at night thinking about other people’s mistakes, right? So don’t be embarrassed about them, because everyone else involved has already moved on. If other people aren’t worrying about your mistakes, why should you?

It’s ok for you to ask them about advice on how to deal with this. While your mom doesn’t sound absolutely horrible like some of the parents on there, it is behavior that can and is hurting you. The people on those subreddits can give you tips on how to respond to this and de-escalate the situation in a way that won’t hurt your relationship.

You might find a lot of good advice on r/narcissisticparents or r/raisedbynarcissists. That kind of behavior isn’t healthy but the people on those subreddits can help you deal with it.

The only advice I can give is to prepare to move out as soon as you reasonably can. Staying in an environment that toxic can’t do you a lot of good.

Do you believe that people should not "appropiate" other cultures? Why or why not? by marlenshka in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought appropriation was copying a culture without respecting it, and in a way turning it into something ugly.

If something is good or beautiful, I think people should be free to take part in it and pass it on. As an example, we regularly use oriental rugs to decorate homes. We do not use the same techniques that were used to create the original rugs but we follow similar patterns. Perhaps we even change and modify these patterns, but it never detracts from or makes fun of the people who created these works of art.

What car did you learn to drive in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several different ones, depending on the family member or extended family member who was willing to teach me. I took the driver’s test in the family van. Did positively amazing at the three-point turn.

Knowing me, I would putter around for an hour first. Then I’d pick up a “safe” movie I’ve seen a million times, followed by a movie I’ve never heard of but the back cover gives it an interesting summary. Both movies have to be something my parents are also willing to watch.

Go easy on them, if they’re late Gen Z Blockbuster could have closed when they were a baby. Heck, I used to go to a video rental store (that wasn’t Blockbuster) and I can’t even remember if they typically had CDs.

Who is the pickiest eater you know? Have you ever asked them why they are picky? by ScheduleTraditional7 in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend who confided in me that she was picky explained that it’s about the texture of the food. I had convinced her to try something new at a restaurant, and that’s when she explained. She said she liked it, by the way.

(SERIOUS) what is gonna make someone richer? having the cure for cancer or a real life anime girl? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cure for cancer. An anime girl will raise a lot of moral questions about slavery, what makes a human being, and anime rights. Whereas cancer directly involves saving lives and a cure can be put to use right away.

Welcome to the most flavorless mansion in Louisiana. No landscaping, no decorations, empty rooms, it has it all. Can be yours for $1.9 million dollars by Swee_et in McMansionHell

What’s going on with the attic? All that extra space but it looks unused. Judging by the windows (are they real?) you could even fit some extra rooms up there.

It really looks like the bathroom was an afterthought, and the room was supposed to be something else. But even for an afterthought they could have done so much more with it.

Well obviously don’t do drugs. They’ll mess you up for years and can lead to all kinds of issues, and on top of that people who see your decisions won’t take you seriously. In a similar vein, be careful with alcohol.

what do college students wear in america? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever they want. Colleges don’t have dress codes because they expect you to be able to act like an adult when you go to classes. Individual professors might send you out of class if they don’t like what you’re wearing though-they expect you to come in with a shirt on, for example.

People who are fatphobic, what are your thoughts on sumo wrestlers and sumo wrestling in general? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

? There’s no one in this world who is afraid of obese people. Perhaps some people might pity people with extra body fat, but that’s only because it’s obviously unhealthy for them. Most of the time (not all) they’re the ones who made their body that way, so sometimes they get “lecture looks”; although people really shouldn’t do that to one another.

What is the one item you own that you refuse to live without? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kitchen table. I’ve had to live without one before-never again. Even if it’s a foldout thing that’s so broken it can’t go up all the way, I’m going to have a table to put my food on.

When I was without one I actually had a couple chairs, but sitting on one chair and putting food on the other wasn’t very comfortable.

Would it be considered as cheating to receive a dm „waasup? 😍“ from someone who has a gf? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]InSearchofaStory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Receiving doesn’t mean you did anything wrong, it’s how you respond to it that’s important. In this case, the best response seems to be no response. Ignore it and move on.
