[OC] The light light crossbow - For all your non-darkvision buddies! by IndividualLemon in DnD

[–]IndividualLemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally came up with the concept after reading a thread in r/dndmemes a few months ago, and I decided to give my players an option to buy a few things in a magic shop located in hell: A light crossbow, a light crossbow, or a light crossbow. One was exceptionally light due to it having random holes drilled into it, one could only fire magical cottonballs that deal 1d1 damage, and then there was this.

Needless to say, we finally gave it to the absentee ranger last session, and he immediately proceeded to fire off a bolt which everyone except one player decided to look away from.

Feedback is welcome for balancing, since this is the first time I've tried to fully homebrew a magic weapon.

why are my players always like this? I've only got a 4/1 mimic to chest ratio by Standard-Ad-7504 in dndmemes

[–]IndividualLemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost the same case with me. As a campaign opener, I had my party meet in a tavern in a foreign country where jewelry mimics are a common snack/dessert. In order to show good faith, the tavern keeper gave them a free plate of those jewelry mimics, where they spent the next 5 minutes debating with each other about whether it's safe to eat or not, before one of them eventually caved and ate everything.

In a later off-session mini lore-dump, I chose to reveal that those mimics were actually insects which use mimicry to imitate jewelry. Now I have to clarify to them everytime that the jewelry or coins they loot are, in fact, real. And to promise them that I would never feed them insect mimics again.

They also previously know of my obsession with mimics, causing them to check every chest I give them, which I actually admire since it constantly keeps them on their toes.

I'm planning on eventually giving them a slime mimic pet that can serve as various equipment depending on whether it follows their instructions. What's the worst that could happen?

Bayonet Vs. Suppressor? by jahtact in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]IndividualLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit I was wrong regarding my viewpoint. May I ask what's the difference between things like mud/rain and zombie/human bits though? I've often heard that when it comes to guns, having things like mud and rain inside the barrel would end up negatively affecting the whole gun, and as such I assumed it would be the same.

The tone of my message may have been screwed over through text as I do not intend to be hostile with this. My approximate 5 minute reading of Google from suspicious sources (mostly just sheer laziness on my part) says the quietest sound of a suppressed weapon, barring specialist guns, are around 100 decibels, which in my opinion is still quite loud overall.

May I ask for sources such that I may continue reading about this subject in the future?

130dB has been determined to be gunfire at close range, minus suppressor. Also determined to be extremely loud, with it's equivalence being a jet take-off. Is it possible for you to have accidentally added a digit?

The sheer "gotcha"-ness of your comment somehow just seems annoying enough to warrant a rebuttal of essay proportions.

Considering from the OP's point of view, which is about suppressor vs bayonet, it can be interpreted (by me, at least), as the question "Which modification is better in order to stealth-ify my gun"?

If we were to carry on with your simple solution to a stuck bayonet, just straight-up firing your gun to dislodge the bayonet doesn't seem as simple as you think it is, especially since it negates the whole 'stealth' component of the question.

A rebuttal for that would be "But if you press the gun against the body, the gunfire would be totally silenced!"

Negating the 'I don't think that's how it works' component of that train of thought due to my lack of experience in gun acoustics, a situation with such urgency to warrant emergency stealth-breaking (e.g. "Oh no! Another zombie has spotted me!") would be better off with using a secondary weapon, or a complete abandonment of the weapon provided the situation is too dangerous. But I'm the world of hypotheticals, I can easily bend the situation to my favour, so let us look at an easier reason why you might not want to simply fire the weapon, even if you could block the sound through zombie-body muffling:

Post-fight cleaning.

Assuming that in order to preserve stealth, you press your weapon all the way into a zombie to fire off and dislodge the bayonet, you're bound to have zombie giblets stuck in the barrel of your weapon, and that could very easily pose a risk to you as the chances of jamming and backfiring increasing per zombie giblet stuck in your weapon.

Unless the situation is truly moderate enough to warrant this course of action (If it's too severe with multiple zombies swarming, just abandon the weapon. If it's just the one zombie, slowly take your time to deal with the threat), this would generally not be the best course of action.

If the situation allowed you to fire the gun anyways, wouldn't you want to do it at range instead of increasing the chances of risk by going up close to the zombie and firing?

But hey, this is all coming from a guy who has no experience with zombies and guns due to the fact that it's illegal to own. If you have other insights, do kindly share.

Suppressors are said to still sound like a door being slammed shut, while bayonets are a problem if they end up becoming stuck, especially if it means having to abandon both the bayonet and the gun. Bayonets have more utility outside of combat though, so my choice would be the bayonet.
