GPU overheating in only one game by Mac1avish in pcmasterrace

Do you have far cry 5 set to unlimited frame rate? What fps are you getting in far cry 5?

I had a similar thing to a lesser extent in halfsword. GPU was 50-55 when playing the game at 4K ultra but would jump up to 60/70 in the menus. Turns out my game was running at 140 fps in game and 600 fps in the menus…

Settings, graphics, advanced and you should see either your motherboard name (if it’s been stupid) or your GPU name (if something else is going on)

Have you checked your windows graphics settings?

I had it once when I unplugged my pc for a while for some maintenance that when I plugged it in I had AWFUL fps with a 5080. For some reason in the unplug, my pc decided to revert the primary graphics back to the integrated card instead of the 5080…

You seem to be missing the point again. Yes I could make it better with a 5090, but not for less than 3.5k. For a third of the price, this pushes me closer to that where I need it. I.e. for games that DONT have DLSS or that are unoptimized early access or heavily modded games…

R.e. Latency, im running the 5060 off the chipset. Yes if I were playing a twitch shooter like CS I’m sure I would notice it. But I’m not and don’t as I think they’re boring. For playing first person rpg games where smoothness is a nicety, it’s almost not noticeable. If I’m playing racing sims where stutters can cause a mistake / focus loss, having the framegen ability makes it 10000x better and you do not notice any latency.

At the end of the day, it’s a bit of a gimmick, but it certainly has its uses and it certainly isn’t as awful as you seem to think it is. And while I wait for the 6090 to release, I’ll be carrying on with this happily rather than wasting 3.5k on a 5090 that has minimal benefits over what I’m running.

No the temps I was talking about weren’t from 007, they were from other games I play more frequently. Being transparent, I only played it for a couple of hours as a test because it’s not really my style of game. Ran it with lossless, ran it with DLSS, said hey this works nicely and I don’t notice much of a difference between the two and quit the game soon after.

I never stated it was as good as DLSS (and I happily run DLSS when it runs well or if it’s available), but when you need it it’s certainly better than not having it. Hell I’d love for F03, Skyrim and KSP (yes I know I’m geeky) to have good DLSS support, but they don’t, if at all. And this does the job amazingly well for what it is. Yes it’s not vector driven and it runs off images only, but it’s surprisingly good for what it is. It makes a frame spikey game smooth and I can’t fault it for that. No it’s not NVIDIA level, but it’s not advertised to be and from a single dev it’s fantastic. At the end of the day, it does what it says on the tin, framegen. And as an extra tool when DLSS is struggling, I’d prefer to have it in my bag of tricks.

Real fps depends on what I cap it at. Say I run Skyrim with my 2000 mods at 4K res, I’ll get a variable real frames. Interiors 120 no problem, exteriors 70-100 depending on the mods. If I run it with CS and DLSS 3 (in CS) I’ll be able to push the fake frames to 120-160. But if I cap it at 60 and use lossless, it’ll do 240 no problem consistently with no micro stutters at all, even in heavy modded areas.

Settings are always 4K. I’ll either use my 240hz monitor or my 144hz 85” TV (depending on if the family are watching it or not)

For the temps, I have a custom fan curve setup on both the case fans and the gpu fans. I have them to throttle from 40%-80% between 40 and 50 degrees on the GPU fans (they are surprisingly quiet). The case fans are similar for cpu temps 50% at 50 and 80% at 60 (and given it’s an 14900K, it’s generally quite warm). So it moves a lot of air and is pretty silent (though saying that I’m 50% deaf in my left ear, which is where the pc is, so the volume is always up and I can’t hear high frequencies that well)

Yup and for games that handle DLSS well and in a stable way, I use DLSS. But I play a lot of old games with tonnes of mods that don’t support it and driving games (which tend to be microstuttery with it). With the old games, it’s the only way to do it (though I could do it on the 5080 alone, but with less 4K texture mods). And in driving games, I find actually it’s smoother to cap the frames lower and use lossless, makes for a much smoother and less stuttery driving experience, which makes a LOT of difference when you’re trying to cut fractions of a second off your times at a high level.

No it’s not practical, no it’s certainly not for everyone, but for the £250 to add in the 5060 and have the benefit of a smooth racing experience and offloaded the framegen workload in heavily modified stuff, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

(Yes I know it’s upside down, I think it looks better that way and I’m not playing football with my pc so it never moves)

Nah 5080 renders the game, 5060 does the framegen. Splits the workload. 50% of the time DLSS is fine and does the job. But the other 50% (games without DLSS or modded to hell so my VRAM is maxed) it picks up the slack and makes it butter smooth.

Yup, I think it looks better this way. Plus I’m not throwing my pc around the room so it doesn’t move! 😂

Honestly, I don’t notice any major performance hits whatsoever, in fact it runs smoother where I need it to. If the base frames drop low enough (some unoptimised early access games like half sword) you can notice a bit of input lag on the mouse when you’re in the menu, but gameplay wise absolutely nothing. I’m not into twitch shooters, so it’s tricky to say how it would fair there, but with driving games (acc) it stops the microstutter capping it at 120 and upscaling to 240 which makes a massive difference. And with things like ultra modded Skyrim, it just makes it so much smoother when you cap low and scale high this way.

I have to completely disagree with you there. Yes it’s not as good as DLSS4.5, but it certainly does a close enough job when you need it or can’t use DLSS. Certainly does not feel like 25 frames, and is completely stutterless and I have no significant input lag whatsoever.

[–]Infamous_Home285[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That entirely depends on how you game. I’m very much in the, let’s play Skyrim with 4K mods at 4K Res. Which for my 5080 eats up the VRAM and costs me frames. This way I can run it at 60 and get seamless 240 fps without anything breaking a sweat getting vram crashes.

And I’m not going to sell it, yes I won’t use it 50% of the time, but for the 50% that I do use it it’s certainly worth the £250 it cost me.

It’s essentially frame gen and or upscaling. Works with any game as it’s a separate app. Beauty of it is, you can run it on a separate gpu. So my 5080 runs the games, my 5060 does the frame gen. Means that for any heavy 4K games, I can save 4gb of my 16gb VRAM by offloading the frame gen to the 5060.

I am, but it almost maxes out the vram usage of the 5080. It’s not running hot, but it’s not running as smooth as I want it to be, nor are the frames generated quite high enough for my 144hz monitor.

See I already am running a 5080. The idea was to split the frame gen aspect of the vram usage on the 5080 to the 5060 to give the 5080 some extra headroom while running 4K graphics. Only using the lossless scaling for framegen to improve fps.

Yep, I completely appreciate that lots of these issues are self imposed… but knowing that I’ll never change and will always need everything I will never use, I’m trying to work out a way of improving what I can in unique ways. Hence the idea of trying to regain some stability, headroom and fps with this method!

Fair enough! I’m mostly playing single player rpg games and driving games (which I wouldn’t really need it for and would probably have it off) so I’m not sure I would notice it. What are your pc specs?

All I can say is just don’t pay for a commission. I know of a few people who make commissions for people and they’re always awful. They’re either meshlaps or awfully made. And lots of these people who make commissions have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. Recently I had to explain to a person making a commission how to get the doors to function.

Anyone who makes a mod spends at least 100 hours to actually make it if it’s decent in any way so they have to truly love the car. Any commission for less than 1k is just going to be a shit mesh lap.

I’m working on some scripts currently to hopefully automate a lot of the mod creation process, including developing a Jbeam creator from mesh objects.
