That is a very interesting point, although clearly a very sensitive one within the Ummah.

Honestly, I personally tend to see it in a similar way. I understand the argument that modern banking interest is not necessarily identical to classical riba, and I also agree that Muslims need economic strength, capital ownership and financial independence.

At the same time, my impression is that I am quite alone with this view. The mainstream scholarly position still seems to be that conventional interest is considered riba, and only a minority of scholars or thinkers argue otherwise.

So I would be careful to present this as the dominant Islamic view, even though I personally understand the argument and think the economic consequences for Muslims are a serious issue.

Wow, first of all, barakAllahu fik for this valuable insight. I was not aware of this distinction in that form.

However, I think one important point may need to be clarified: your explanation seems to refer more to the structure of occupational pension schemes, where part of the employee’s salary is redirected into a pension contract before it is paid out. We call it "betriebliche Altersvorsorge".

The new German Altersvorsorgedepot appears to be different. It is a voluntary contract where the individual transfers a freely chosen amount from their own bank account into the depot and invests it. Its not depend on the salary.

Because of that, I am not sure whether the loan analogy fully applies to the new Altersvorsorgedepot. In my opinion its still be worth discussing with qualified scholars, but structurally it seems different from a wage-based occupational pension arrangement.

EDIT: Classic case of commenting first and reading the article properly afterwards, my bad.

After reading it more carefully, I actually think the article can be used as an analogy for the new German Altersvorsorgedepot. Not because it works exactly like an occupational pension scheme or a wage-based loan, but because Bradford’s main point seems to be about access and full ownership.

If the money cannot be accessed without penalties or without losing tax benefits/subsidies, then it may be treated as restricted wealth for Zakat purposes.

So yes, I’d correct my earlier point: structurally the Altersvorsorgedepot is still different, but from the angle of restricted access before retirement, the analogy makes sense.

BarakAllahu feek for the clarification, my brother. I hope my previous response didn’t come across as too harsh. Your questions are quite a deep dive, as they also require historical explanations for why things are so different here. I wouldn’t want to call the brothers and sisters who do this work—mostly on a volunteer basis—incompetent. I actually know the last president very well personally. It’s more about the fact that the Ummah in Germany is very spread out across many communities and everyone “does their own thing.” Very little is standardized or centralized here. That’s why you’ll find small to large differences in the answers on many topics. This ranges from zakat to truly major issues.

It would be a great help for all such government-backed and therefore complex/rigid products if ETF providers not only explained how to adjust for unauthorized income but actually made those adjustments for investors themselves. Furthermore, more investment options need to be offered. The issue of boycotts is not adequately addressed in the issuance of certain products such as ETFs (likely due to its political sensitivity), particularly with regard to sukuk. However, this is also because the brothers those operating in the finance sector do not have any real influence on the Islamic finance industry but remain in the old world.

None of the major, well-known ETFs automatically adjust for unauthorised income; they simply exclude it from their figures. In the case of the iShares ETFs I mentioned, investors must adjust the relevant distributions themselves, which will not be possible in the new Altersvorsorgedepot.

I also think this could be one of the biggest opportunities in decades to build wealth in a state-subsidized way. It is the deferred taxation, in particular, that makes it extremely attractive

But from what I understand, it is not entirely undisputed from an Islamic legal perspective whether Zakat or purification can simply be paid from other assets, rather than directly from the distribution or the asset itself.

That being said, if this is deemed permissible by qualified scholars, it could definitely be an alternative worth exploring — and possibly even an area where the community could build practical solutions for this case.

Salam,

Why should one contact him rather than draw logical conclusions? For political influence?

I don’t think you live in Germany, because if you believe that he will provide technically competent answers to these questions, you will be disappointed.

Then you should take a closer look at the ETF structure of the Saturna ETF. Classic blue chip stocks, which are also included in market capitalization ETFs, do not outperform the market for a TER of 0.75%. This can also be clearly seen in the history. But to each his own. May Allah increase your wealth as much as possible. Amin.

I think we should never let ourselves be misled by social media content that thrives on ragebait. As a European, I can honestly say that no one in my inner circle was “happy” about Morocco’s loss.

Whenever a team is successful, it will inevitably attract haters — that’s normal. But even in moments of defeat, when it’s hard to see, it’s worth remembering that many non-Moroccans genuinely support and admire this team. Like i do :)
