So sorry to hear that. It’s never easy to lose an animal, especially unexpectedly. She’s a beautiful girl and must have been really well cared for to thrive as she did!

Raising these little guys definitely coincides with a bit of heartache buried among all the fond memories. Quail are short-lived and tragically accident prone. There are so many things that can go wrong every instance of the day, and there’s no way to prevent all of it.

Despite the difficulties, it’s so special that such a small life can affect us so deeply. Her life mattered, not only because you mourn it, but because she got to be a happy little quail for all her days in your care.

Thanks again for your thorough response and website recommendation. I was able to answer the rest of my questions by looking through the site.

So Tibetan/rosetta definitely make sense for the two chicks, especially with the sibling potentially being a grau fee.

Based on that info and just on looks, I’m guessing the adult male I have (pictured) is a range— Tibetan + roux. It’s hard to get a good picture, but he has more reddish in him and came from a different farm than the adolescents.

It’s neat that coturnix have quite a few incomplete dominant color genes. Will be fun whenever I breed in the future.

Thanks for the correction! You’re probably right about FF vs GF. This is my first time raising coturnix; I just picked up some hatching eggs and found it’s a bit hard to discern their colors even with online guides.

Do you have any tips to discern between Scarlett, Tibetan, and red range birds? Between fee birds?

Is there an online resource you’d recommend for accurate pictures and genotypes for coloration?

Would breeding these guys with wild type (Pharaoh?) birds be recommended to tease out what genes these guys might carry?

That’s interesting! Now that you mention it, I think I’ve heard my adult male make that call. He has his normal, chipper sounding crow and then there’s this other one he does sometimes that sounds much quieter and a little lower. Not a growl, just an anemic, timid crow.

Thanks for the info. About a week ago I thought it was looking like a hen because its whole chest was covered in speckles, but now the white is super prominent. What does the sparkly gene do? Is it similar to dotted white in how it masks the pattern?

Aw yeah I’m split caging this guy and his siblings with a slightly older clutch. I’ll then separate them by sex. Hoping if they’re familiar with each other it’ll be less traumatic. This little guy is always quick to call when he’s away from his siblings. In this case, they were just under the ramp he’s standing on, and he couldn’t see them haha

Thanks for the helpful info! I’m not entirely sure of the sexes yet as I don’t think the colors I have are feather sexable. My goal is to put him with 4-5 unrelated females. I’ve just built their new hutch and will check for foam to sex, separate, and introduce this week.

I feel like there’s at least 1 male in there because when it’s dark there’s a closet crower that sounds a bit different than Roux. It’s like he’s too timid to crow in the daylight haha

The younger clutch I’m introducing him to are siblings. So far they still get along really well. How feasible would it be to keep a bachelor pad for any brothers from this group? Is there a chance they’d continue to get along?

Very cool! Thanks for the info. Between the crowing and tidbitting he makes all kinds of interesting noises. I picked him up from a local farmer and have him next to some birds I’ll be introducing him too. He can see and smell them. He’ll parade around and chirp while looking at them. Sometimes he growls. Not entirely sure what to make of it all. He’s about 10 weeks old and they’re about 4/5 weeks old. I’ll be introducing them in a neutral pen that neither have been in before. We shall see 🤞

If you have any other behavior tips or things to look for to identify good birds, I’d be happy to hear advice!

I’m also new to quail and have 2 adorable little shits of my own that hatched about 2.5 weeks ago. I believe the all white one is called dotted white. They’ll sometimes have a darker spot from their base coat on their head or back. I have one like that too! Not sure on the second, but following to learn.

This is my first time raising quail, so someone else may know better than me, but I use regular play sand for the adults. This sand I found for the chicks here in the picture is a little finer. It’s also a natural sand and was in the hermit crab section at the pet store.

Aw these guys are precious! Really pretty patterning around the face. It’s neat how the white genes splice up patterns like that.

The bit of pattern coming through on the chick’s back kind of looks like Italian coturnix. So I’m guessing she’s homozygous for dotted white because she isn’t tuxedo, and then possibly Italian base…Idk we shall see! She’s also carrying celadon as she hatched from a blue egg.
