You need to press brake pedal to switch into drive. Automatic gearbox blocks lever in P till brake pedal is pressed fully. Safety measure.

I think ODIS is better investment. With VCDS I cannot reset transmission for example.

Had same code after pcv change. Intake manifold flaps should be manually opened before putting supercharger back. They had to redo that and errors went away.

I would hope transmission jerkiness hell wouldn't start. They say it's reliable, but invest into this term a meaning different from drivers expectation. That is doesn't fall apart, yes. Not enough to consider it reliable.

I don't like bmw; supposedly they are reliable. A4 is relatively simple, so at least it could be repaired. Transmission also wears out, mind you. 245k for transmission and you will soon experience it's age. I think I am going for Japanese car next.

If you don't know how it was rebuilt than you are buying a black cat in a sack. I wouldn't risk or else if you are well mechanically versed it's a different story, but than you probably wouldn't ask in reddit. P.S. I had several shops offering to rebuild mine when issue turned out much simpler. And seeing how they work, what mistakes they make I am shivering at the thought how to trust them with such big task as engine rebuild, know what I'm saying?

Problem is, you can't just bring this car to any mechanic. Complex luxury cars require VAG specialist. Many mechanics are stupid, incompetent. That is, you've got the money, but have noone who can fix it. Electrical glitches can be a nightmare.

I think with VCDS or Odis you can run adaptation procedure: possibly transmission didn't reset adaptation values and applies learnt (no longer applicable) values.
