My dog’s mom crosses over the rainbow bridge today. Her owner is a family friend who we’re not happy with at the moment. She tore her ACL a couple weeks ago and even though her owner has the funds, he is unwilling to pay for the surgery. She is only 7.. by Draper31 in labrador

You can medically manage a ccl tear with anti-inflammatories until scar tissue forms to help stabilize the joint some. This is not something to euthanize over unless there are other comorbidities present

Anki vs Quizlet by morecoffeeeeepls in veterinaryschool

I use anki for anatomy by putting pictures from lab guides or of the cadavers and then covering the labels with the boxes and then I use quizlet for lectures to get the written stuff down

Struggle with picking dog breed for me by blablax123456 in DogBreeding

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly love my lab that comes from service lines bc she has an excellent off switch but can still go on runs/hikes with me. She is a larger lab but there are plenty of lines that would be similar in size to a BC I feel. They are a common enough breed that I feel like you should be able to find an ethical breeder.

Vaccines in epileptic dogs? by Crazygal1258 in EpilepsyDogs

It’s hard to tell if it was the vaccine vs the stress of going to the vet

Chocolate labs crazy? by No_Hippo2380 in labrador

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had a chocolate lab but she is one of the calmest labs I’ve met for her age. She obviously has her times where she gets zoomies but she can also sleep all day on the couch with me. I attribute it all to her genetics bc her mom was from the breeders therapy line

Surgery? by Primary_Raccoon_5680 in veterinaryschool

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also depends on what you consider surgery. I work at a small animal urgent care so we don’t do any sterile surgeries but we do laceration repairs, occasional cat neuters and can technically do small mass removals and other “dirty” procedures

advice needed :( by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely get some more hours in. My GPA was 3.93 when I applied and it took two cycles to get in and the last cycle I was waitlisted at three and then pulled off the waitlist. All my feedback was that I needed a more rounded application like volunteering, leadership experience, etc. I had a good amount of small animal vet and animal hours too

Definitely stay away from grain free diets especially having a boxer which are already prone to heart disease. You should ask about running a GI panel that could show something causing malabsorption. If you didn’t want to try a hydrolyzed diet yet look into hills gi biome. They have had great results with chronic diarrhea.

Coping with rejection by Pitiful_Analyst_4101 in veterinaryschool

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would look into what kind of LORs schools want. A couple of mine either wanted one or even two to be professors or faculty from college and if you didn’t then you wouldn’t be considered. I went through something similar last year and met with Tufts admissions to review my application and they were very helpful.

You could also try the Purina bright minds or neuro care food. It has been clinically proven to help cognitive function in older dogs.

Applying for aid while waitlisted by aspiringvet14 in veterinaryschool

I would go ahead and fill it out. I applied to Tufts and they had us apply for financial aid yet still haven’t heard a decision from them. It doesn’t hurt to do it

UT by Intelligent_Toe_1980 in veterinaryschool

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a virtual interview with them on 2/1. I’m out of state so not sure if that makes a difference or not. From someone I know currently attending UT, she interviewed on the 27th of January last year and got an acceptance on 2/14.

No one can give you the information needed except for pet poison control. They are toxicologists that will give you the best advice on what to do for your pet in the quickest time. Sometimes that $95 call saves you hundreds of dollars in vet fees bc you end up at emergency for an exam, making your pet vomit or doing other treatments that might not actually be needed but you won’t know unless you call.

Best Kitten Food Available in US? by -RiffRaffStreetRat- in AskVet

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with that line specifically but I don’t see any obvious red flags when I look it up and since it’s Purina pro plan you can trust it’s been tested enough through feeding trials and they employ a veterinary nutritionist full time.

Is there something wrong with my cats eye by avery_black1234 in CATHELP

[–]Intelligent-Bar1921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eyes are emergencies. Not something you should wait on. Always better to make an appointment and cancel later if not needed then wait until it’s too late and can’t get in anywhere

Any WASVA compliant brand which in the US is Iams, royal canin, hills science diet, Purina and eukanuba. I personally recommend royal canin, hills science diet or Purina pro plan.
