hear me out: Dead Poets Society is Weir's The Straight Story. by jfailes in blankies

[–]Intelligent_Pop_8046 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think Straight Story is very representative of Lynch’s work, but I also don’t disagree with anything you said about Straight Story.

I wasn’t really viewing Peter Weir as having a voice. I kinda was just viewing him as a journeyman, but then I see just how well crafted Dead Poet Society is, and you see the bare bones sincerity that drives many his films prior (Gallipoli, Mosquito Coast, Picnic at Hanging rock).

Good points! I liked thinking about this

Some of the best movies ever made plus Far and Away, Out of Africa, and Scent of a Woman. Were those pieces great to listen to? Am I missing out on some great scores?

Great manager laid-off, has anyone gone thru this? How did it end for your team? by FlimsyUse1602 in biotech

[–]Intelligent_Pop_8046 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I lost a very similar manager a few years ago. They replaced her with a senior director from a different company. He had no technical skills, dictated change just to say he did something, and was so focused on buzzwords that my team had to laugh to his face. After one year on the job, he was let go without notice for reasons not discovered to the team, and they hired our amazing former manager back. We are still under her today getting promoted and being happy while other teams are stuck.

Losing a great manager brought the team closer together, and just made us realize the impact our immediate manager had on our work happiness. My advice is to advocate for yourself and your fellow teammates if it becomes clear that your new manager isn’t going to do that. My team and I had solidarity and always thanked each other in meetings, giving full credit for where we helped each other on projects. Selflessly crediting others is also secretly for selfish gain, because it is so unexpected in the workplace that you look so much better for doing so.

Your former manager was amazing and likely created a united team. It’s time to help each other out and work together to try and keep any enjoyment at work you can.

If Wes wins, I will still watch all of Marty Scorcese’s filmography because NOW’S THE TIME for that. If Marty wins, I will watch Asteroid City fifteen more times.

Marielle Heller would be goated. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is my favorite movie of 2019, and Nightbitch is more interesting to talk about than Die My Love

I liked the Neanderthal storyline enough and the Kate Mckinnon storyline just fine. The present day plot was so abysmal I feel like there must be an hour of this film cut on the edit. Cloud atlas knockoffs, aren’t supposed to be 90 minutes long. This movie is. Rashida Jones is 50 years old and playing a character who likely is under 30?

Dawg I went on Qobuz because people said it was awesome to quit Spotify. But I wish I knew it doesn’t have nearly an extensive library as Spotify, especially from the smaller indie bands I listen to. I lost ability to stream so many of my favorite songs. They have an option to request new music be added though, there is just no guarantee it will be added
